The National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria is a parastatal of the Federal Government Ministry of Health, charged with the responsibility of postgraduate training of medical and dental doctors in Nigeria.
It was established on September 24, 1979, under the National Postgraduate Medical College decree No. 67 now Cap N59 Laws of the Federation 2004. [1] It is a tertiary institution at the apex of medical education in Nigeria, producing medical, surgical, and dental specialists/subspecialists who are capable of providing world-class research, teaching and healthcare. [2]
The college organizes the mandatory part 1 and the part 2 (final) fellowship examinations for medical and dental doctors in residency training, as well as the entrance primary fellowship examinations into several faculties. Success in the part 2 examination leads to the award of the Fellow of the Medical College (FMC). The examinations are written twice in a year across the country. Diploma programmes are also run in select faculties, while revision courses are conducted for trainees in all faculties annually. The college administers the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical Journal, a MEDLINE-indexed journal published quarterly. On September 14, 2015, the college faulted and objected the dissolution of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria by Muhammadu Buhari, the then President of Nigeria. It insinuated that such premature dissolution of the council will encourage quackery and malpractice in the health sector. [3]
The body has been under scrutiny lately for its poor recognition around the world, for its poorly updated medical education compared to other countries, and for the limited acceptance of its fellowship qualification in parts of the world. Meanwhile, such narratives are beginning to change since the recent introduction of the British model of postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Clinical Sciences. The MD, an optional qualification equivalent to the PhD, is statutorily a pre-part 2 (fellowship) degree.

Doctor of Medicine is a medical degree, the meaning of which varies between different jurisdictions. In the United States, and some other countries, the M.D. denotes a professional degree. This generally arose because many in 18th-century medical professions trained in Scotland, which used the M.D. degree nomenclature. Luhansk State Medical University was founded in 1956 in Luhansk, Ukraine. Initially known as Voroshilovgrad State Medical Institute, it received university status in 1994. Diplomate of National Board (DNB) is a Post-graduate Master's degree same as MD/MS degree awarded to the Specialist Doctors in India after completion of three year residency. DNB courses are run and the degrees are awarded by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), New Delhi, an autonomous academic body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India on successful completion of their postgraduate residency. People who completed an MD/MS program in their respective subjects are also eligible to appear in the final DNB certification exam along with regular DNB trainees.
Master of Medicine (MMed) is a postgraduate professional clinical degree awarded by medical schools to physicians following a period of instruction, supervised clinical rotations, and examination. The degree usually takes three years to complete, but may take up to four years in some countries. It is awarded by only medical subspecialties and usually includes a dissertation component.before enrollment in this program,medical graduate has to pass the entrance test. The degree may complement an existing fellowship in the chosen specialty or be the sole qualification necessary for registration as a specialist.
The P.E.S. Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PESIMSR) is the first and only medical college in the town of Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India. It was established on 11 September 2001. The National Eligibility Entrance Test (Postgraduate) (or NEET (PG)) is a qualifying and ranking examination in India, for students who wish to study various postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), Diplomate of National Board (DNB), Doctorate of National Board (direct 6 years course in the field of Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery) and diploma courses, in government or private medical colleges in the country. This exam replaced All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE). The exam is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). The counselling and seat allotment is conducted by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Basil Chukwuemeka Ezeanolue is a Nigerian professor of Otolaryngology. He was a member of senate and he is a fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, fellow of the West African College of Surgeons in the Faculty of Otorhinolaryngology, and Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Basil Ezeanolue was, at several times, the Head of Department of Otolaryngology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Ituku Ozalla, Enugu, and Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Nigeria. Basil Ezeanolue was the Secretary and later President of the Otorhinolaryngological Society of Nigeria. He delivered the 82nd Inaugural Lecture of the University of Nigeria, at Enugu Nigeria, entitled, "Hear the Voice" on 17 July 2014. It was also the first inaugural lecture coming from the Department of Otolaryngology of the University of Nigeria. Ezeanolue also delivered the 6th Valedictory Lecture of the University of Nigeria entitled, "Challenges of balancing work with life, Geriatric Otorhinolaryngology and living post-work life of retirement - A discourse of the experiences and the lessons learnt from the Nigeria University System and Health Services Sectors perspectives of an Academic Clinical Otorhinolaryngologist Head and Neck Surgeon" on 10 November 2023. He is the Founder and Surgeon-in-Chief of Balsam Clinics, Enugu, Nigeria. He was also a member of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Governing Board, Awka,, Anambra State. On 20 September 2018, he delivered the 36th Convocation Lecture of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, entitled, "Do Not Be Afraid And Do Not Fail To Rescue – a discourse on the challenges confronting Nigeria Health Sector" at Ijanikin, Lagos. Basil Ezeanolue's publications have been cited 440 times according to the AD Scientific index ranking. and 443 times according to the google scholar index.
