The National Progressive Party (NPP) was a political party in the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat led by Reuben Meade.

A political party is an organized group of people, often with common views, who come together to contest elections and hold power in the government. The party agrees on some proposed policies and programmes, with a view to promoting the collective good or furthering their supporters' interests.

Montserrat British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory (BOT) in the Caribbean. The island is in the Leeward Islands, which is part of the chain known as the Lesser Antilles, in the West Indies. Montserrat measures approximately 16 km (10 mi) in length and 11 km (7 mi) in width, with approximately 40 km (25 mi) of coastline. Montserrat is nicknamed "The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants.

Reuben Meade Chief Minister of Montserrat

Reuben Theodore Meade is a retired politician from Montserrat who served as the island's first Premier between 2010 and 2014. He previously served as Chief Minister between 1996 and 1999 and 2009 to 2010. A member of the Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP), he previously led the now-defunct National Progressive Party.

History

The NPP was established in 1991. [1] In the elections later that year it won four of the seven seats in the Legislative Council, resulting in Meade becoming Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister of Montserrat was the head of government of Montserrat, an island in the Caribbean that is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, appointed by the Governor of Montserrat on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, Montserrat's head of state. The last Chief Minister of Montserrat was Reuben Meade of the Movement for Change and Prosperity. The chief minister was appointed by the governor from among the members of the Legislative Council. His cabinet, the Executive Council, is appointed by the governor from among the elected members of the Legislative Council and consists of the chief minister, the attorney-general, the financial secretary and three other ministers.

The 1996 elections saw the party reduced to a single seat. It subsequently joined a coalition government with the Movement for National Reconstruction (MNR) and an independent MP, with MNR leader Bertrand Osborne becoming Chief Minister.

Bertrand Osborne was a British politician from Montserrat. He served as the territory's Chief Minister from 13 November 1996 to 22 August 1997. He resigned from his post amid demonstrations over his dealings with the British government in the wake of the island nation being ravaged by a volcano eruption.

The NPP won two seats in the 2001 elections, in which the New People's Liberation Movement won the remaining seven seats in an enlarged National Assembly. The party was subsequently dissolved in 2005, when Meade formed the Movement for Change and Prosperity. [1]

The Great Nigeria People's Party was one of the six major political parties that fielded candidates for elections in the Nigerian Second Republic. The party was formed by a splinter group from the Nigerian People's Party, the group was led by Waziri Ibrahim, a politician and businessman from Borno. Waziri was one of the leaders of the three associations that formed the nucleus of NPP. The original intention of NPP was to transcend the politics of ethnicity and to promote the cause of both the prominent ethnic groups and ethnic minorities. However, the entry of Nnamdi Azikiwe to NPP led to a power struggle in which Waziri lost. General elections were held in Montserrat on 8 October 1991. The result was a victory for the National Progressive Party (NPP), which won four of the seven seats in the Legislative Council. NPP leader Reuben Meade became Chief Minister.
