The National Youth Icon Award is awarded annually by the International Youth Committee (IYC), a United Nations accredited organization, at the World Youth Summit. The award is given for the young people globally in recognition of their development work and their contribution towards developing a peaceful, fairer, prosperous and sustainable future that meets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of United Nations. Launched in the year 2016, the World Youth Summit honors young people who have made significant contributions in professional or voluntary capacity covering areas such as poverty reduction, democracy, conflict resolution and prevention, environmental preservation, community service and social development. The National Youth Icon Award consists of a Gold Pin Medal, a citation and a scroll. [4] [5]

History

The National Youth Icon award was first introduced in 2016 by the International Youth Committee (IYC), which is an organization accredited by the United Nations. The award is conferred to 70 young individuals globally, setting high standards for their inspiring work and services contributed towards achieving the (SDGs) of the United Nations.The award gives an international recognition to these individuals who dedicated their lives to communities, nations and the world. Powerful, outstanding & influential youth role models in the fields of social work, education, human rights, peace, philanthropy, business, sports, health, entertainment, youth empowerment, and popular arts and culture are honored with the National Youth Icon Award. In 2017 the International Youth Committee (IYC) also introduced the Asia Inspiration Award for recognizing the inspirational achievements of young individuals in Asia. Vipul Pawar

 The nominee must have been engaged in development work for more than 12 months, either in a professional or voluntary capacity;  The nominee must be an Indian citizen and the development work must be taking place in any state or union territories of the country. Foreign nationals also can apply from this year;  The nominee should not be older than 40 as on 31 August 2020;  Individuals can nominate themselves or be nominated by someone who can accurately describe their development work;  The winners must agree to take part in publicity generated by the IYC.

Awards will be decided on the basis of: 1. Level of Impact; 2. Level of innovation/fresh approaches to problem solving; 3. Quality of achievement; 4. Quality of the evidence provided. 5. Sustainability

Award Value

National Youth Icon Award consists of a Gold Pin Medal, a citation and a scroll. The top award carries Rs. 100,000 (Rupess One Lakh Only) with a citation, a special seal and a gold medal which will be given to only one best of the best from among the winners as “IYC Young Person of the Year”.

Date of Award Ceremony

22 February 2021 in New Delhi, India in a glittering ceremony in presence of the foreign guests and high level dignitaries, guests and speakers.

National Youth Icon Award 2019

The World Youth Summit 2019 was held on 27 September 2019, at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi, under the theme of "Achieving SDGs by 2030: Moving from Policy to Action." 81 young individuals who were performed to be the next leaders across the world conferred with the National Youth Icon Award 2019 by International Youth Committee (IYC). Dignitaries such as Gaur Gopal Das (International life coach), Dr. Arunabha Bhattacharjee (40 Under 40 HRs in Asia), Ms. Nusrat Jahan, Actor & Honorable MP of Republic of India, Breshna Musazai from Afghanistan and Dinesh Subasinghe joined the World Youth Summit 2019. Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala is a Sri Lankan women’s rights activist with 20 years of experience and a rock climber / mountaineer for nearly as long. She has worked at national, regional, and global levels as a technical advisor, advocate, trainer, researcher, and programme manager on issues relating to gender, gender-based violence, sexuality, masculinities, women’s human rights, and more recently, women in sports. In 2016, she became the first Sri Lankan to summit Mount Everest. In recognition of this achievement, from 2016-2019 she was appointed the Goodwill Ambassador for Women's Rights by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Women's Affairs. In 2017, she was also included in the BBC’s list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world. In 2023, she was the recipient of the International Olympic Committee’s Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champions Award for Asia(Olympic Council of Asia). Since returning from Everest, she has delivered over 500 motivational speeches, to schools, universities, clubs, professional sports teams, corporate entities, government, and non-governmental organizations, as well as the military and police. She is currently the Gender and Human Rights Advisor at the Family Planning Association in Sri Lanka, working to address stigma and discrimination faced by people seeking HIV services, and is a co-creator of ‘Delete Nothing’ – a local web-based initiative aimed at addressing online gender-based violence in Sri Lanka. Jayanthi serves on several boards and is the current Chairperson of the Women and Media Collective and the International Centre for Ethnic Studies. She is also a trustee of the ‘Women of the World Foundation’, a UK-based charity. Hatharasinghege Michelle Dilhara is a Sri Lankan actress and an Environmentalist. Salsapuna(Sinhala: සල්සපුනා) also known as Sal Sapuna is a long running Sri Lankan television drama series broadcast on television network Sirasa TV and directed by Nalan Mendis. It is a drama about the conflicts between family members due to their social and political backgrounds. The character Podi Patharakari portrayed by the actress Michelle Dilhara became popular among the Sri Lankan audience.

Amrish Ranjan Pandey is a youth leader and is currently officiating as the National Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress. He was appointed the National Secretary of IYC in March 2020 and is currently the IYC In-charge for the State of West Bengal and was given the charge in July 2020, as West Bengal Assembly polls are also approaching. He is a practising lawyer in the Delhi-NCR region.

Michelle Dilhara is a Sri Lankan actress, presenter and a philanthropist. She has appeared in over Fifteen teledramas. This is a list of roles performed by Michelle Dilhara.Currently she holds the record for the most likes on a Facebook post in Sri Lanka. She became popular as Podi Patharakari in Salsapuna Teledrama on Sirasa TV.

Emy is a Sri Lankan television series broadcast on Independent Television Network, directed by Sanjaya Nirmal and produced by Malathi Wijayasinghe. The teledrama was shot in 2017 and released in 2019.

The invisible to visible movement is a solidarity campaign founded by Sri Lankan actress, author, and social activist Michelle Dilhara to minimize the social invisibility and social exclusion of the people affected due to factors such as their educational status, appearance, disability, being in an orphanage, barriers to full participation in employment as senior citizens or anyone who feel marginalized or being invisible in the society. The movement is initiated based on the sociology research and implementations discussed in the book Social Invisibility is not a Fiction it Exists. The main focus of the movement is to regenerate the damaged Social connection by creating a hub as a collaborative platform for communication.

Kala Suri Barbara Sansoni was a Sri Lankan designer, artist, colourist, entrepreneur, and writer. She was known for her works in architecture, textile designs, and handwoven panels. She founded the Barefoot textile company, a company that is highly acclaimed for its handloom fabric. She also served as the chairperson and chief designer of Barefoot Pvt. Ltd for several years.
