Christiaan Frederick Beyers Naudé was a South African Afrikaner Calvinist Dominee, theologian and the leading Afrikaner anti-apartheid activist. He was known simply as Beyers Naudé, or more colloquially, Oom Bey.
The Western Bypass is a section of the N1 and the Johannesburg Ring Road located in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Known at the time as the Concrete Highway, the freeway was initially opened in 1975 as a route to avoid the city centre of Johannesburg and to provide access to the western areas of the Witwatersrand. From the south, the Western Bypass begins at the Diepkloof Interchange in Soweto, where it splits from the N12 freeway and ends at the Buccleuch Interchange, where it merges with the N3 Eastern Bypass, M1 South and N1 Ben Schoeman freeways.

It terminates at the N14 freeway near Muldersdrift. It was previously known as DF Malan Drive. It forms part of Johannesburg's M5 road.
The Bell River is a river that drains the Drakensberg uplands of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Its drainage basin, a part of the headwaters of the Orange River, is approximately 424 square kilometres (160 sq mi) in extent, ranging from an altitude of 1,720 m (a.m.s.l.) to 3,001 m. The river's source is near the Lesotho border to the north of the high Naude's Neck Pass. Downstream it passes the town of Rhodes, to eventually form a tributary of the Kraai River some 40 km (direct) from its source. In fact the Bell River and the Sterkspruit, become the Kraai River just northwest of Moshesh's Ford flowing further west towards Aliwal North, where it joins the Orange River.

Joubert's Pass, is a mountain pass in the Senqu Local Municipality area in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is a gravel road, has a remarkable maximum gradient of 1:6, an elevation of 2236m above sea level at the highest point and is possibly the fourth highest mountain pass in South Africa. The three higher mountain passes are also situated in the Senqu Municipal area and they are Naude's Neck Pass at 2590m, Carlislehoekspruit Pass at 2517m and Volenteershoek Pass at 2381m above sea level. Close on the heels of Joubert's pass, is Baster Voetslaan Pass at an elevation of 2235m, Lundean's Neck Pass at 2165m, Otto Du Plessis Pass at 2114m and Barkly Pass at 2020m. These 8 passes, of which 5 are possibly the highest in South Africa, make up the well known “8 Passes Challenge” of the North Eastern Cape.

The Empire Exhibition, South Africa, held in Johannesburg, was intended to mark that city's jubilee and was opened by the Governor-General of the Union of South Africa on 15 September 1936. It was the first exhibition held in the Union of South Africa following two earlier exhibitions in Cape Colony in 1877 and 1892. The idea of an empire exhibition in South Africa was first discussed in 1934 by the Buy Empire Committee of Johannesburg. On 9 January 1935, the Grand Council of the Federation of British Industries passed a resolution for a proposal to hold an Empire Exhibition in Johannesburg in 1936 in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee of the city.

It passes through Mayfair and Brixton before travelling through Melville, Roosevelt Park, Northcliff, Blackheath and traversing the N1 Western Bypass at Randpark Ridge. It passes under the N14 freeway near Muldersdrift passing through the agricultural holding before ending at Kromdraai Road in the Lindley Agricultural Holdings. The main part of the route runs along Beyers Naudé Drive.
