Naz Shahrokh (born 1969) is an Iranian-born visual artist and educator. [1] She is a conceptual artist and has worked in many mediums, including Persian miniature painting, sculpture, [2] site-specific installation, land art, and video art. Shahrokh lives in Abu Dhabi, and has previously lived in Paris, Los Angeles, and Brooklyn. [3]
Naz Shahrokh was born in 1969 in Tehran, Pahlavi Iran.[ citation needed ] She is the great granddaughter of Iranian politician and elected Zoroastrian representative, Keikhosrow Shahrokh. Naz grew up with a great respect for her Zoroastrian faith and for its associated traditions. [4] She had a well-travelled childhood: 'I was born in Iran,' explains Shahrokh, 'but I left when I was four and moved to Paris. At age 11, I moved to Los Angeles, and at age 20 I moved to Brooklyn, New York.' [5] She speaks Persian, French, and English. [6]
Shahrokh received a BFA degree (1993) and MFA degree (1997) in painting; followed by receiving a MS degree (1997) in art history, all of which were from Pratt Institute. [7]
She taught fine art and art history at Pratt Institute, from 1998 to 2004.[ citation needed ] Shahrokh moved to Egypt in 2004, where she taught at the American University in Cairo until 2006.
Since 2006, she has served as an assistant professor of art and design at the College of Arts and Sciences at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, UAE. [8]
Due to her childhood travels and experience of different cultures, Shahrokh's work has many rich and varied inspirations. Her inspirations include: Persian miniature painting, 'Land art and earthworks, Minimalism and Conceptual art, and ephemeral Native American sandpainting'. [4] The majority of her materials are detritus, either synthetic or organic, or a combination of both. [6] Through her work, Shahrokh seeks to transform these disregarded and commonplace materials into something less ordinary. This deep connection with the natural environment is an important focus in Shahrokh's work. [6]
With her roots in the Zoroastrian faith, she attempts to connect her studio practice with a commitment to making objects that are harmonious with the natural environment. Recycling and reducing waste has been a deep, international concern since the early 1990s, when Shahrokh first began to use recycled paper in her work. As well as feeding 'Shahrokh's desire to be in harmony with her environment, [4] ' it is also a form of her own personal conceptual problem solving. Within her studio practice she has collected many different forms of detritus, such as leaves, which she treats and uses as small, miniature canvases, or sticks, bottles and other objects with which she forms large-scale, site-specific installations in the desert landscape.
Much of Shahrokh's works relates directly to her cultural roots, and artistic 'conversations' with the style and beliefs of other artists, such as Ana Mendieta and Joseph Beuys, [4] to which Shahrokh pays homage in her artwork, entitled '22.1'. An installation work that includes found and collected materials, '22.1' comprises glass jars, folded linen shirts and a silver spoon in a suitcase.
Whilst living in New York City, Shahrokh created work in protest at the mayor's decision to stop glass recycling. She created an installation from bottles that took on the topography of a mountain, Stratosphere (2002 to 2004).
More recently while living in the UAE, her installation Haft-Sin Zazen (2010) made of piles of salt on a pure white cloth, alludes to the regions' reliance on desalination and water treatment. This work was conceptually linked both to the landscape and also to personal meaning for Shahrokh in context to her religious belief system. In her article on Naz Shahrokh's work, Sharon Parker [4] also links Haft Sin Zazen to Shahrokh's experience of living in Egypt and relates the salt pyramids to earth mounds in the Egyptian landscape. "Haftsin" is a part of the traditional Iranian New Year celebration and it is important to note that Shahrokh's work, strongly relates to the concepts of community and sharing.
'In school I tended to focus on concepts. My main focus was recycling – giving new life to materials. I started working with paper, thinking about trees, thinking about materials and how to give them new life'. [5] She created "Column Wall" in Abu Dhabi in 2010 - a very neatly stacked pile of the local 'National' newspapers 'collected over six months, intended to represent the tree that gave its life to produce it'. [5] "Column Wall" could also be mistaken for a piece of architecture - it runs from floor to ceiling of a building, blending in with the surrounding walls and shadows.
Shahrokh makes social or political commentaries, but does not employ the shock tactics other contemporary artists often use. She raises awareness of important community issues, often relating to natural sustainability, through a painstakingly careful use of disregarded items and the peaceful regularity of the shapes and colours that she chooses. With its international influences and ancient philosophical inspirations, Shahrokh's art is a patient and methodical quest 'to be in harmony with her environment.' [4]
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was an Emirati royal, politician, philanthropist and the founder of the United Arab Emirates. Zayed served as the governor of Eastern Region from 1946 until he succeeded Sheikh Shakhbut as the ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966, and then as the first president of the United Arab Emirates while he retained his position as Abu Dhabi's ruler from 1971 until his death in 2004. He is revered in the United Arab Emirates as the Waalid al-Ummah, credited for being the principal driving force behind uniting the seven Trucial States to found the Union of the United Arab Emirates.
Najat Makki is an Emirati visual artist. She is a member of the Dubai Cultural Council. and one of the pioneers in Emirati contemporary art scene.
A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western Medieval and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tradition continued, under some Western influence, after this, and has many modern exponents. The Persian miniature was the dominant influence on other Islamic miniature traditions, principally the Ottoman miniature in Turkey, and the Mughal miniature in the Indian sub-continent.
Environmental art is a range of artistic practices encompassing both historical approaches to nature in art and more recent ecological and politically motivated types of works. Environmental art has evolved away from formal concerns, for example monumental earthworks using earth as a sculptural material, towards a deeper relationship to systems, processes and phenomena in relationship to social concerns. Integrated social and ecological approaches developed as an ethical, restorative stance emerged in the 1990s. Over the past ten years environmental art has become a focal point of exhibitions around the world as the social and cultural aspects of climate change come to the forefront.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. It is the country's largest mosque, and is the key place of worship for daily Islamic prayers. There is a smaller replica of this mosque in Surakarta, a city in Indonesia. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan built this mosque to convey historic consequence and to embody the Islamic message of peace, tolerance and diversity.
Neo-conceptual art describes art practices in the 1980s and 1990s that emerged out of the conceptual art movement of the 1960s and 1970s. These subsequent initiatives included the Moscow Conceptualists, the United States Neo-Conceptual artists, such as Sherrie Levine, and the Young British Artists, such as Damien Hirst.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi is an art museum located on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It runs under an agreement between the UAE and France, signed in March 2007, that allows it to use the Louvre's name until 2047, and has been described by the Louvre as "France's largest cultural project abroad." This strategic collaboration seeks to associate well-known brand names with new museums and cultural initiatives, positioning the destination as a global hub for culture and prestige. It is approximately 24,000 square metres (260,000 sq ft) in size, with 8,000 square metres (86,000 sq ft) of galleries, making it the largest art museum in the Arabian Peninsula. Artworks from around the world are showcased at the museum, with stated intent to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western art. Louvre Abu Dhabi located in a place which is at the heart of Saadiyat Cultural District, which is rapidly evolving into a leading destination for art, history and culture.
Nnenna Okore is an Australian-born Nigerian artist who lives and works in Chicago at North Park University, Chicago. Her largely abstract sculptural forms are inspired by richly textured forms and colours within the natural environment. Okore's work frequently uses flotsam or discarded objects to create intricate sculptures and installations through repetitive and labor-intensive processes. She learnt some of her intricate methods, including weaving, sewing, rolling, twisting and dyeing, by watching local Nigerians perform daily domestic tasks. In her more recent works, Okore uses plant-based materials to create large bioplastic art forms and installations. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums within and outside of the United States. She has won several international awards, including a Fulbright Scholar Award in 2012. and the Australian Creative Victoria Award in 2021.

Nancy Rubins is an American sculptor and installation artist. Her sculptural works are primarily composed of blooming arrangements of large rigid objects such as televisions, small appliances, camping and construction trailers, hot water heaters, mattresses, airplane parts, rowboats, kayaks, canoes, surfboards, and other objects. Works such as Big Edge at CityCenter in Las Vegas contain over 200 boat vessels. Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Monochrome I, Built to Live Anywhere, at Home Here, at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, contains 66 used aluminum boats and rises to a height of 30 ft.
