Nazanin Daneshvar (born in 1983, Tehran) is an Iranian Internet entrepreneur who founded the discount website Takhfifan. [1] In 2019, she became one of UNCTAD's "eTrade for Women Advocates" from the developing world. [2]
Daneshvar was born in Tehran in 1983 and went to grad school in Tehran. [2] After that, she worked in London assisting a startup trying to break into the Iranian market. [3]
When Daneshvar started Takhfifan, she was on her own as there were no other female website entrepreneurs she could compete against. She faced a lot of poor judgment from potential business contacts, and she had to take her father along for the first year to show some gravitas, as they would not believe she was in charge. [4] The company is very similar to Groupon but her company operates in Iran. The site offers large discounts to potential buyers and then passes on discounts the suppliers offer. [3] Despite her difficulties, she believes that Iran is improving [4] and she has encouraged other Iranian emigrants to return to Iran and help it improve further. [3]
In 2017, she was invited to speak at the fourth annual Global Female Leaders Summit in Berlin, where she explained the challenges that she has faced. [5] She went on to lead a discussion about cultural glass ceilings and the possibilities and opportunities facing women managers in Iran. [6] One of the advantages of Iran at the moment is the sanctions created by other countries that limit imports and exports. With these sanctions in place then, it creates a hothouse for establishing local versions of other sites. [7] [8] She demonstrates her confidence by mentoring other women using the ten years of experience she has gained in e-commerce. In September 2019, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development announced seven "eTrade for Women Advocates" from the developing world. Daneshvar was named and the others were Clarisse Iribagiza, Nina Angelovska, Xiaofei Yao, Patricia Zoundi Yao, Claudia de Heredia, and Helianti Hilman. The awards were announced on the periphery of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, but Daneshvar and Clarisse Iribagiza from Rwanda did not attend the award ceremony. [9]

Throughout history, women in Iran have played numerous roles, and contributed in many ways, to Iranian society. Historically, tradition maintained that women be confined to their homes to manage the household and raise children. During the Pahlavi era, there was a drastic social change towards women's desegregation such as ban of the veil, right to vote, right to education, equal salaries for men and women, and the right to hold public office. Women were active participants in the Islamic Revolution. Iran's constitution, adopted after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, proclaims equality for men and women under Article 20, while mandating legal code adhering to Sharia law. Article 21 of the constitution as well as a few parliament-passed laws give women rights such as being allowed to drive, hold public office, and attend university but not wearing a veil in public can be punished by law; and when in public, all hair and skin except the face and hands must be covered. However, this is often not enforced; notably in recent years, Iranian women have started a number of groups to rebel against the government's oppressive policies and reclaim their independence and rights.

Nazanin (Mahabad) Fatehi is an Iranian woman who was sentenced to death for stabbing a man who allegedly tried to rape her and her 15-year-old niece, events occurring when she herself was a 17-year-old. After more than two years in jail, Fatehi was cleared of intentional murder, ordered to pay diyeh, and released on bail. As of 2012, Fatehi's whereabouts were reported to be unknown to concerned supporters outside of Iran.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is an Iranian-British dual citizen who was detained in Iran from 3 April 2016 as part of a long running dispute between Britain and Iran. In early September 2016, she was sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of plotting to topple the Iranian government. While in prison, she went on at least three hunger strikes trying to persuade Iranian authorities to provide medical treatment for her health problems. She was temporarily released on 17 March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Iran, but subject to electronic monitoring.

She is the CEO and co-founder of the mobile technology company HeHe Limited and she is one of the UNCTAD's seven "eTrade for Women Advocates from the developing world". She was previously the winner of the East African entrepreneur reality TV show Inspire Africa Season 1.
Nina Angelovska is the former Minister of Finance in North Macedonia. She is also an entrepreneur, UNCTAD eTrade for Women Advocate and president of the Macedonian E-commerce Association. She co-founded and was heading the first deal platform and leading e-commerce company in Macedonia, Grouper.mk. She made a successful exit when the Polish Group Asseco SEE acquired her company, Grouper.mk.
Patricia Zoundi Yao is a well-known social entrepreneur in Côte d'Ivoire. She is the founder of several companies, including Quickcash (fintech) and Canaan Land (agribusiness). Her determination and leadership was recognized by UNCTAD in September 2019 when she was one of seven "eTrade for Women Advocates".
Xiaofei Yao is the Chinese e-commerce CEO of Rogrand - a company involved in pharmaceuticals e-commerce.
Helianti Hilman is a lawyer involved in e-commerce in Indonesia with "Javara". The business's mission is to market indigenous Indonesian food products. In 2019 she became one of UNCTAD's "eTrade for Women Advocate".

Roberta Annan is a Ghanaian businesswoman and the founder of the African Fashion Foundation. She is also an investor, philanthropist, and a United Nations Environment Programme Goodwill Ambassador. Annan was the youngest African to be inducted into the African Leadership Hall of Fame. A graduate of Carleton University and Georgetown University, Annan began her career with an internship at the U.N. headquarters in New York City. Annan is the owner of Annan Capital Partners, an investment company in Sub-Saharan Africa, and ALDG, a portfolio of assets in sustainable hospitality, agribusiness, and sustainable luxury in Africa.
