Nazaruddin Sjamsuddin (born 5 November 1944 in Bireuen, Indonesia) is a former chairman of the General Elections Commission (KPU) that oversees the operation of elections in Indonesia. [1] [2]
After completing elementary, junior and senior high schools in Aceh, Nazaruddin enrolled into the Faculty of Law and Public Sciences University of Indonesia in 1963, and obtained a degree in political science in 1970. He also attended Monash University, Australia and obtained his MA and Ph. D. in political science.
As a lecturer in political science at UI he pioneered since 1968 when he was a student, and resumed after studying in Australia and continued to serve the University of Indonesia until finally given the title of Professor in political science in 1993.
Although the 2004 general election is considered to be successful internationally, its members, are dragged into corruption cases, one of which involved Nazaruddin Sjamsuddin. On May 20, 2005, Nazaruddin was suspected in the alleged corruption case at the KPU by the Corruption Court. He was charged and arrested, in addition to paying a fine of Rp450million, and replace state funds amounting to Rp 14.193 billion. On December 14, 2005 the Corruption Crime Court then sentenced him to seven years imprisonment on December 14, 2005. He was also required to pay a fine of Rp 300 million and pay Rp5.03 billion in liabilities jointly with Hamdani Amin, Head of KPU Finance Bureau considered to be detrimental to the state in the case of procuring personal accident insurance payable to election workers. On February 8, 2006, Nazaruddin's lawyers reported the Panel of Judges to the Judicial Commission. The lawyers say that in deciding the case, the Panel of Judges had violated Judicial Code of Conduct. Among other things mentioned that the Panel of Judges had violated the provisions of KUHAP (Book of Criminal Procedure Law) and Law no. 31 of 1999 on Corruption Eradication juncto Law no. 20 of 2001 concerning amendment to Law no. 31 of 1999 and the Criminal Code. The report to date (2011) has never received a response from the Judicial Commission. Nazaruddin was paroled in March 2008.

Legislative elections were held in Indonesia on 9 April 2009 for 132 seats of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) and 560 seats of the People's Representative Council (DPR). A total of 38 parties met the requirements to be allowed to participate in the national elections, with a further six regional parties contesting in Aceh only. He was chairman of Golkar Party and speaker of the People's Representative Council until his arrest in 2017 for corruption. Born in Bandung, he entered politics in 1998 after a business career and became a member of the People's Representative Council following the 1999 general election. After he was re-elected for a third time in the 2014 general election, won by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, he was appointed DPR (Parliament) Speaker by the majority opposition coalition.

Mohamad Taufik was an Indonesian politician who was a member of the Jakarta Regional People's Representative Council from 25 August 2009 until his death in 2023. He was a member of the Gerindra Party for most of his legislature career, but resigned from the party in October 2022. Having been convicted of corruption in 2004, he received significant attention in 2019 when he successfully filed a lawsuit against the General Elections Commission to run for his second term in the legislative body.

After 11 years on the run, he was arrested in Malaysia in July 2020 and sent to Indonesia, where he was later jailed for bribing police and a public prosecutor.
The 2020 West Sumatra gubernatorial election was held on 9 December 2020 in West Sumatra, Indonesia, as part of the simultaneous local elections. This election was held by the West Sumatra Regional General Elections Commission (KPU), to elect the Governor of West Sumatra along with his deputy to a 2021–2024 mandate.
Throughout March 2023, the Central Jakarta District Court and the General Election Supervisory Agency made separate rulings in favour of the Just and Prosperous People's Party following the party's lawsuits against the General Elections Commission (KPU). The lawsuits were brought forth after PRIMA failed to qualify to participate in the 2024 Indonesian general election. One of the demands in PRIMA's court petitions was the postponement of the election, which was granted by the District Court.
