Neighbours is a 2014 Indian Hindi-language supernatural horror film directed by Shyam Ramsay and a remake of the 1985 American film Fright Night . [1] The cast includes Arbaaz Ali Khan, Roushika Reikhi, Shakti Kapoor, Gavie Chahal and Rufy Khan. The film was released on 14 March 2014. Neighbours was the first vampire film by the director, [2] and the first Ramsay film to be set in a city, [3] Mumbai, [4] but Neighbours did not have a big theatrical release. [5] Ramsay stated to the media: “My new film Neighbours is about a seemingly normal neighbour who turns out to be a vampire. We’ve cast a super-model Roushika Reikhi as a sexy vampire.” [6]
The film opens with Vikrant, a forest officer, who is in search of Kapalika, who is rumoured to be a vampire, who has been terrorising a local town for ages. He finds her and Kapalika attempts to seduce him but runs away when Vikrant sees the devil's mark on her. He gives chase to her and eventually kills her with the power of a talisman. However, this is witnessed by Kapalika's Master (Aka).
In Mumbai, Sanam Chopra is a horror buff; she has horror films and literature filling up her room, much to the annoyance of her family. Vikrant's sister, Tanya shifts to Mumbai but is captured by Aka and he brings to a bungalow, facing Sanam's house, where the spirit of Kapalika possesses Tanya. The next morning, a man comes asking Sanam and her boyfriend Karan for the address of the bungalow and is later murdered by Aka when he enters. His body is found by the police the next day which worries Sanam.
Tanya brings another man to her Master under the pretext of offering him a job but later they capture and kill the man by chopping his fingers and extracting his heart. Sanam spies on them and is shocked to see Tanya drinking the man's blood. She tries to inform her aunt and uncle but they dismiss her concerns, due to her addict to horror. Her boyfriend also makes fun of her when she says Tanya is a vampire. They go to meet professor Indernath Malhotra, who has researched on vampires and written horror books which Sanam is a big fan of. Sanam asks the professor to come to the bungalow to seek the truth and he agrees. He sprinkles some holy water on Tanya who runs away and the professor sees her vampiric face in the mirror.
One night, Sanam, Karan, Aryan and the professor's assistant Sweety are partying and Sweety is attacked and killed by Tanya and her minions when she and Aryan are alone. Sweety, now a vampire, goes to Indernath's house and tries to kill him but fails and disappears. Meanwhile, Vikrant comes to see Tanya but she doesn't recognise him and Aka captures Vikrant. He reveals he and Kapalika hunts people and extract their to please the Devil and increase their malevolent powers. The professor tries to leave town but is convinced by Sanam, Karan and Aryan to stop and kill the vampires. He tells them that vampires are weak during a lunar eclipse, coincidentally occurring the same night.
Tanya is being brought in a coffin to a factory by Aka's men to be safe from the eclipse, but Sanam, Karan, and Aryan, who have learnt the truth, try to stop them, and a fight ensues. Tanya then tries to kill Sanam but is impaled by a lifting hook. Vikrant manages to escape and helps them and succeeds in killing Aka. Vikrant cries over the loss of Tanya but Karan tells him that she has now been freed from the possession of Kapalika.
The film was poorly received and was declared a box office disaster by Box Office India. [7]
