According to local lore,enslaved people in the western Roanoke Valley noted that the Sun was directly over the mountain roughly around noon local time. In 1995 and 1996,the Tour DuPont staged a time trial in the Roanoke Valley,the highlight of which was a ride over the steep,winding Twelve O'clock Knob Road. The north slope of the ridgeline formed by Poor Mountain,Twelve O'clock Knob and adjacent peaks such as Sugarloaf Mountain mark the southwestern boundary of the Roanoke Valley.

Earl Abbath Fitzpatrick was a Virginia lawyer and member of the Virginia General Assembly representing Roanoke between 1940 and 1959,first as a delegate and then as a state Senator. A lieutenant in the Byrd Organization,Fitzpatrick was active in the Massive Resistance to racial integration vowed by U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd after the U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Brown v. Board of Education. He introduced much of the segregationist legislation and was vice-chairman of the Boatwright Committee which investigated the NAACP for litigating on behalf of civil rights,before being defeated in the 1959 Democratic primary.
Leonard Gaston Muse was a Virginia lawyer and state senator who represented Roanoke between 1936 and 1946. An independent Democrat who often criticized the Byrd Organization,Muse became involved in the Massive Resistance to racial integration vowed by U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd after the U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Brown v. Board of Education as a member of the state board of education.
Alfred Victor "Vic" Thomas (1929–2006) was a Virginia businessman and politician. As a Democrat,he represented parts of Roanoke and Roanoke County,Virginia in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1974 until 2004.
During the 2018 election year in Virginia several local,state,and federal elections were held. On May 1,several of Virginia's cities and towns held mayoral,city council,and school board elections. Primary elections for Congress were held on June 12.
