Vancouver is a coastal seaport city in western Canada, located in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia. As the most populous city in the province, the 2016 census recorded 631,486 people in the city, up from 603,502 in 2011. The Greater Vancouver area had a population of 2,463,431 in 2016, making it the third-largest metropolitan area in Canada. Vancouver has the highest population density in Canada with over 5,400 people per square kilometre, which makes it the fifth-most densely populated city with over 250,000 residents in North America behind New York City, Guadalajara, San Francisco, and Mexico City according to the 2011 census. Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada according to that census; 52% of its residents have a first language other than English. History

The New Town Animals formed in Vancouver in 1998; band members at the time were Nick "Newtown" Wright on vocals, Jeff "Pop" McCloy and Alex Angel on guitar, Steve "Kicks" Poulin on bass and Chuck Renaud on drums. [2] Signed to Mint Records, [3] [4] They released their debut 7" single in 2000 before following up with the full-length album Is Your Radio Active? in 2001. [2] [5] Shortly after the album's release, Renaud left the band and was replaced by Bryce Dunn of The Smugglers.

Mint Records is a Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada-based independent record label founded in 1991, by friends and campus radio enthusiasts Randy Iwata and Bill Baker. Mint has put out over 150 releases, several of which have won Juno Awards.

The Smugglers are a Canadian indie rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia. The band consists of vocalist Grant Lawrence, guitarists Nick Thomas and David Carswell, bassist Kevin "Beez" Beesley and drummer Graham Watson. Past members include Paul Preminger, Adam Woodall, Bryce Dunn, Danny Fazio and John Collins.

The band toured across Canada with labelmates Operation Makeout to support the album; [6] in March 2002, they performed at Canadian Music Week on a bill that included Royal City, Stars, Constantines and Buck 65; the show was broadcast live by CBC Radio 2's RadioSonic . [7] Tracks from the album received substantial radio play on campus and community radio, [8] and "Three Steps Backward" entered rotation on MuchMusic. [9]

Canadian Music Week is an industry conference and music festival held over ten days in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Stars (Canadian band) Canadian indie rock band

Stars is a Canadian indie pop/rock band based in Montreal, Quebec. Since forming in 2000 they have released nine albums and a number of EPs. Their music has been nominated for two Juno Awards and two Polaris Music Prizes.

The band broke up before releasing another album. Poulin went on to play with The Briefs, McCloy and Dunn joined the Tranzmitors, and Wright later formed the new band The Split-Ups. A 2001 recording of the band performing "Three Steps Backward" on CBC Radio 3 was released on the compilation album Mint Records Presents the CBC Radio 3 Sessions .

The Briefs band

The Briefs are an American punk rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 2000 and originally consisting of Daniel J. Travanti (guitar/vocals), Steve E. Nix (guitar/vocals)>, Lance Romance (bass/vocals) and Chris Brief (drums/vocals). They play punk rock music, influenced by acts such as Buzzcocks, The Undertones and The Adverts. They released their first full-length album, Hit After Hit, in October 2000 via Dirtnap Records. The band was courted by and reportedly signed with major label Interscope Records, following their 2002 release of Off the Charts, but that deal fell through. The Briefs surfaced on California's BYO Records with the release of 2004's Sex Objects and the reissue of their Dirtnap-era full lengths. They most recently released Steal Yer Heart in 2005. The Briefs have released a prolific number of 7" singles during their career, on several small independent labels.

CBC Radio 3 radio station

CBC Radio 3 is a radio network that consists of two parts devoted to Canadian arts and music: a radio service which is available on Sirius XM Satellite Radio and streaming audio, and several daily and weekly podcasts from the CBC Radio 3 website. The audio stream is available from both CBC Music and from iTunes Radio, but geographical restrictions are in place to prevent access outside of Canada.

Mint Records Presents the CBC Radio 3 Sessions is a compilation album featuring live sessions from Canada's CBC Radio 3 network, as well as some from the 1990s CBC Radio 2 programs Night Lines and RadioSonic.

Carolyn Mark is a Canadian alternative country singer-songwriter. She has recorded as a solo artist and as a member of the duo The Corn Sisters with American colleague Neko Case, as well as with the bands the Vinaigrettes, Jr. Gone Wild, Showbusiness Giants, the Fixin's and the Metronome Cowboys. She has also provided backing vocals on recordings by The Buttless Chaps, Greenfield Main, Neko Case, Frog Eyes, NQ Arbuckle, Rhubarb Whiskey, and Blackout Beach.

P:ano was a Canadian indie pop band formed in 1999 from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The band's members consisted of Larissa Loyva, Justin Kellam, Julia Chirka, and Nick Krgovich. P:ano's style was a diversity of musical and thematic interests as the band members played several instruments.

Shapes and Sizes are a Canadian indie rock band from Victoria, British Columbia. There are four members — Nathan Gage, singers Caila Thompson-Hannant and Rory Seydel, and John Crellin.

Boombox Saints are an independent hip hop and R&B group based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The band officially formed in 2008 taking their name from the 1990s film Boondock Saints. Within four years, Boombox Saints have released two EPs, The Boombox EP and Bringin' the Boom Back: Based on a True Story as well as a full-length debut album titled For the Moment. They have shared stages with some of today's most commercially successful and respected acts including J. Cole, Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Mos Def, Jay Electronica, Talib Kweli, Souls of Mischief, Far East Movement, Danny Fernandes and Sean Paul.
