The New York State Championships [1] was a men's and women's international tennis tournament founded in 1891. The championships were held in various locations in New York, United States until 1978.

History

The New York State Championships were founded in 1891. [2] The first edition was played at the Congress Springs Park, Saratoga Springs, New York, United States. [3] The championships were held in the different locations including; Bay Ridge, Briarcliff Manor, Forest Hills, Harrison, Jackson Heights, Long Island, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, Rye, Saratoga Springs and Utica. [4]

Champions included Berkeley Bell, Frank Shields, Frank Parker, Don McNeill, William Talbert, Dick Savitt, William Tully, Sidney Schwartz, Tony Vincent, J. Allen Morris.

Defending champion Robert Wrenn defeated Manliffe Goodbody in the challenge round, 6–8, 6–1, 6–4, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1894 U.S. National Championships. Goodbody became the first player from outside the United States to reach the challenge round.

Mary Browne defeated Eleonora Sears 6–4, 6–2 in the tennis final of the 1912 U.S. Women's National Singles Championship. The event was held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Philadelphia in the United States from June 10 through June 15, 1912. The defending champion, Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman, did not participate in this edition and therefore no challenge round was played.

The Tropical Championships also called the Tropical Sectional Championships was a men's open tennis tournament founded in 1887 as the St. Augustine Lawn Tennis Club Tournament. It was staged annually by the St. Augustine Lawn Tennis Club, St. Augustine, Florida, United States until 1894.

The Longwood Bowl was a men's and women's tennis tournament first played at the Longwood Cricket Club courts at Brookline, Massachusetts, United States from 1882 to 1949.

The Minnesota Open previously known as the Minnesota State Championships is an open men's and women's tennis competition founded in 1902 as the Championship of the Minnesota State Tennis Association. The tournament was first played at the St. Paul Lawn Tennis Club, Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States and ran as part of the ILTF Circuit until 1971.

The Florida State Open Championships also known as the Florida State Championships or Florida Open was an open international men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1910 as the Winter Championships of Florida. It was first organised by the Palm Beach Tennis Club and first played on clay courts adjacent to the Royal Poinciana Hotel, Palm Beach Florida, United States. The international tournament was played at other locations throughout its run until September 1972 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Independent Tour.
