New York Yacht, Launch & Engine Company was a shipyard located on the Harlem River in the Morris Heights neighborhood of the Bronx. [1]
The New York Yacht, Launch & Engine Company was active from 1903 until 1931. [1] They built power boats for private owners and smaller ships for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. [1] In 1917 and 1918, they built 30 of the 110-foot SC-1-class submarine chasers for the U.S. Navy (numbered SC-223 through SC-242 and SC-393 through SC-402). [1] In 1919, they built 5 of the 88-foot YT-46-class harbor tugs for the U.S. Navy (numbered YT-77 through YT-81). [1] [2] In 1924 and 1925, they built ten 75-foot patrol boats for the U.S. Coast Guard (numbered CG-160 through CG-169) which were used during Prohibition to intercept rumrunners. [1] [3]
The Defoe Shipbuilding Company was a small ship builder established in 1905 in Bay City, Michigan, United States. It ceased to operate in 1976 after failing to renew its contracts with the United States Navy. The site of the former company is now being developed for business and housing on the bank of the Saginaw River.
The first USS Sturdy (SP-82) was a patrol boat acquired by the U.S. Navy for the task of patrolling the coastal waters of the U.S. East Coast during World War I. Her primary task was to guard the coastal area against German submarines by tending to antisubmarine nets in New York Harbor.
USS Kanawha II (SP-130), later called USS Piqua (SP-130), was a steam yacht that was built in 1899, and which the United States Navy used as an armed yacht in the First World War. She was commissioned in 1917 as Kanawha II, with the "II" added probably to distinguish her from the oiler USS Kanawha (AO-1). She was renamed Piqua in 1918, probably for the same reason.

USS Apache (SP-729) was the first to be delivered of eight motor boats built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Company at Bristol, Rhode Island ordered and financed by members of the Eastern Yacht Club of Marblehead, Massachusetts. The boats were designed by Albert Loring Swasey and Nathanael Greene Herreshoff with the intention that the boats be used by the Navy as patrol craft and built with Navy approval of the design. Apache, as were the other boats, bore names under construction chosen by the owners and were then given the Section Patrol numbers on Navy acceptance and activation. The names were dropped after a period and all the boats then bore only the S.P. numbers.

After the conclusion of her U.S. Navy career, she served as the fishery patrol vessel in the United States Bureau of Fisheries fleet from 1919 to 1940 as USFS Merganser and in the Fish and Wildlife Service fleet as US FWS Merganser from 1940 to 1942.
