Background

Dietmar Woidke was elected as Minister-President for a fourth consecutive time on December 11, 2024. At formation, his coalition was composed of his own party and BSW, which together had a narrow majority of two seats. [1] [2]

    Brandenburg, officially the State of Brandenburg, is a state in northeastern Germany. He is credited with forging a new identity for the state, among other things, popularizing the Brandenburglied, though controversy surrounding several failed projects and his work for the Stasi came up during his tenure. To date, Brandenburg has only had Social Democratic Minister-Presidents.

    The Politics of Brandenburg takes place within a framework of a federal parliamentary representative democratic republic, where the Federal Government of Germany exercises sovereign rights with certain powers reserved to the states of Germany including Brandenburg. The four main parties are the centre-left Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), the populist left Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), and the centre-right Christian Democratic Union.
