Niamh McCarthy (born 4 January 1994) is an Irish Paralympic discus thrower, competing in the F41 classification, a classification for persons of reduced stature. [2] [3] She is the 2018 European champion in the event at her classification and, as of August 2018, the European record holder at 31.76 metres. [1]

Career

McCarthy started competing in discus events in 2013, winning world and European medals before taking a silver at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. [4] [5] [6]

McCarthy won the gold medal at the European Para Athletics Championships in Berlin, August 2018, setting a new European record of 31.76 m [1] [7] [8]

In October 2021, McCarthy retired from competitive throwing after her participation in the deferred 2020 Paralympic Games. [9]

Personal life

McCarthy has lived in England and France. [10] is a former student of Biological and Chemical Sciences at University College Cork. She also practises sky-diving. [10] [11] She has lordosis [10] and competes in F41 classification events, [10] which for women is for those under 140 cm (4 ft 7 in) in height. [12]

After discovering that none of the Irish press or TV channels had sent any journalists to the 2018 Para Athletics European Championships, Niamh decided to cover the Championships herself via her Instagram account.[ citation needed ]

Hollie Beth Arnold, is a British parasport athlete competing in category F46 javelin. Although born in Grimsby, she now lives and trains in Loughborough. She represents Wales in the Commonwealth Games. Arnold was the youngest ever field athlete to ever compete in the Paralympics, at the age of 14 at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, under the guidance of Olympic Javelin Thrower Shelley Holroyd, throwing a personal best. She also threw a personal best in 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. She took the gold medal in the F46 javelin in the 2016 Rio Paralympics, also throwing a new world record at the same time. In 2021, at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, she took the bronze medal in the same event. In 2018, she became the first ever Para Javelin thrower in history to hold all four major titles in the same Paralympic 4-year cycle: Rio Paralympics and world record 2016, London World Championships and world record 2017, Berlin European Championships and course record 2018 and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and world record 2018. In 2019 Arnold lost her World Record to New Zealand F46 Para Javelin Thrower Hollie Robinson with the first 45m+ throw in history. She also holds four consecutive world titles: 2013 Lyon, 2015 Doha, 2017 London, and 2019 Dubai.

Lauritta Onye is a Paralympian athlete who competes in F40 classification throwing events. She competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro winning gold in the F40 shot put. Onye is also an actress, performing under the name Laury White.

Samar Ben Koelleb is a Tunisian athlete who competes in both shot put and discus for her country. She won the silver medal in the women's F41 shot put at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, and bronze medals in both sports at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships.

She represented Tunisia at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and she won the bronze medal in the women's discus throw F41 event. She also competed in the women's shot put F41 event where she finished in 6th place.

Rabia Cirit is a Turkish female para-athlete competing in the F41 disability class of shot put and discus throw events.

Tom Habscheid is a Paralympic athlete from Luxembourg. He is a two-time silver medalist at the World Para Athletics Championships and a six-time medalist at the World Para Athletics European Championships.
