Nicholas James Culkin (born 6 July 1978) is a former English footballer who played as a goalkeeper.

Career

Born in York, North Yorkshire, [1] Culkin signed for Premier League club Manchester United in September 1995, costing £100,000 from York City while still in the club's youth system. [3] He made his Manchester United debut on their tour of Scandinavia prior to the 1998–99 season, coming on for Peter Schmeichel at half-time in their game against Norwegian side SK Brann; Culkin kept a clean sheet as United won 4–0. He signed a new two-year contract with United in May 1999. [4]

He holds the record for the shortest debut in Premier League history, replacing Raimond van der Gouw in stoppage time against Arsenal at Highbury on 22 August 1999, the referee blew up right after Culkin took the resulting free kick. [5] Culkin also received two Charity Shield runners-up medals as he appeared on the bench in the 1998 and 1999 Charity Shields. [6]

He was also loaned to Hull City, Bristol Rovers and Livingston. After leaving Manchester United, he signed for QPR. [7] Overall, he played 93 league matches, three FA Cup matches, and seven League Cup matches. Culkin retired from professional football in April 2005 due to a long-standing knee injury. [8]

Culkin came out of retirement after signing for Northern Premier League Division One North team Radcliffe Borough in August 2010. During the 2011–12 season, Culkin was placed in the NPL First Division North team of the Year, and was nominated for the Fans Player of the Year, losing out to Cheyenne Dunkley. He has also been voted the Supporters Player of the year on two occasions and the club's Player of the Year in 2012. [9] He remained at the club until October 2012.

He joined Prescot Cables in November. [10]

In March 2014 he joined FC United of Manchester. [11] He then joined on for the 2014–15 season. [12] This earned him the record of becoming the first player to appear for both Manchester United and FC United.

The 1998–99 season was Manchester United's seventh season in the FA Premier League and their 24th consecutive season in the top division of English football. After finishing the previous season without winning any titles, United won the Treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in 1998–99, the first side in English football to do so. During the campaign, United lost only five times: in the Charity Shield against Arsenal; in the fifth round of the League Cup against eventual winners Tottenham Hotspur; and three times in the league, including their only home loss all season, against Middlesbrough in December 1998. A run of 33 games unbeaten in all competitions began on 26 December at home to Nottingham Forest, whom they also beat 8–1 away from home in February 1999, Manchester United's record away win in the Premier League. The season was characterised by comebacks, particularly in the FA Cup fourth round against Liverpool and the semi-finals of the Champions League against Juventus, but none more so than in the Champions League final, when Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored in injury time to overturn Bayern Munich's early lead.

The 2001–02 season was Manchester United's tenth season in the Premier League, their 100th season in league football, and their 27th consecutive season in the top division of English football. The second full season of the new millennium was a great disappointment for the Red Devils in comparison to the previous three years. The club finished in third place in the Premier League, their lowest finish in the history of the Premier League at the time, and they were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round. League Cup success was not expected, and the club duly obliged by playing what was effectively a reserve team against a strong Arsenal side in the third round, the day after both teams were on League duty. United's best success in the 2001–02 season came in the UEFA Champions League, in which they reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by Bayer Leverkusen on away goals. Ultimately, United's failure to win anything boiled down a dismal run of form in November and early December when they suffered five defeats in seven league games, including three defeats in a row against Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham United in December. They also lost six home games in the Premier League, their worst home record since the 1977–78 season. They only lost three more league games all season, but that terrible form earlier in the campaign counted against United for the rest of the campaign and they finished 10 points behind champions Arsenal and three points behind runners-up Liverpool.

The 1999–2000 season was Manchester United's eighth season in the Premier League, and their 25th consecutive season in the top division of English football. United won the Premier League title for the sixth time in eight seasons as well as becoming the first English club to win the Intercontinental Cup when they defeated Palmeiras in Tokyo. However, they surrendered their Champions League title with a 3–2 defeat by eventual champions Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. The club controversially did not defend their FA Cup crown, upon request by The Football Association, to compete in the inaugural FIFA Club World Championship in Brazil instead.

The 1995–96 season was Manchester United's fourth season in the Premier League, and their 21st consecutive season in the top division of English football. United finished the season by becoming the first English team to win the Double twice. Their triumph was made all the more remarkable by the fact that Alex Ferguson had sold experienced players Paul Ince, Mark Hughes and Andrei Kanchelskis before the start of the season, and not made any major signings. Instead, he had drafted in young players like Nicky Butt, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil.
