Nicole Van Goethem (31 May 1941 - 3 March 2000) was a Belgian animator and illustrator. She wrote and directed A Greek Tragedy , winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1987. [1]
Van Goethem was born in 1941 in Antwerp. She studied applied arts at the Sint Maria Instituut in Antwerp, Western concert flute at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and evening courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the same city. [2]
Until about the age of 30, she lived and worked in the Antwerp nightlife, but decided to quit and started working as a graphic designer and illustrator for advertising agencies and magazines. After meeting cartoonist Picha, she collaborated on his movies Tarzoon: Shame of the Jungle from 1975, and The Missing Link from 1980. She also worked on the 1984 animated movie John the Fearless by Jef Cassiers. [2]
In 1985 Van Goethem finished her first short animated film, A Greek Tragedy . It won the Grand Prix at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 1985, [3] and the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film [4] in 1987. [2]
In 1988 she finished her second short movie, Vol van gratie (Full of Grace), about some nuns who by mistake enter a sex shop and buy what they believe to be candles, but turn out to be something else entirely. [5] She then started working on third movie, Living Apart Together, scheduled to be about 8 minutes long and with about 75% of the work done at the time of her death. [2]

Frank Film is a 1973 American animated short film by Frank Mouris. The film won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and was inducted into the National Film Registry in 1996.
Richard Edmund Williams was a Canadian-British animator, voice actor, and painter. A three-time Academy Award winner, he is best known as the animation director on Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) -- for which he won two Academy Awards -- and as the director of his unfinished feature film The Thief and the Cobbler (1993). His work on the short film A Christmas Carol (1971) earned him his first Academy Award. He was also a film title sequence designer and animator. Other works in this field include the title sequences for What's New Pussycat? (1965) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) and title and linking sequences in The Charge of the Light Brigade and the intros of the eponymous cartoon feline for two of the later Pink Panther films. In 2002 he published The Animator's Survival Kit, an authoritative manual of animation methods and techniques, which has since been turned into a 16-DVD box set as well as an iOS app. From 2008 he worked as artist in residence at Aardman Animations in Bristol, and in 2015 he received both Oscar and BAFTA nominations in the best animated short category for his short film Prologue.
Cinema of Belgium refers to the film industry based in Belgium. Belgium is essentially a bi-lingual country divided into the Flemish (Dutch-speaking) north and the French-speaking south. There is also a small community of German speakers in the border region with Germany. Belgium is further a federal country made up of three regions and three language communities . Due to these linguistic and political divisions it is difficult to speak of a national, unified Cinema of Belgium. It would be more appropriate to talk about Flemish or Dutch-language cinema of Belgium and Walloon or French-language cinema of Belgium.

World Festival of Animated Film Zagreb, best known as Animafest Zagreb, is a film festival entirely dedicated to animated film held annually in Zagreb, Croatia. Initiated by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA), the event was established in 1972. Animafest is the second oldest animation festival in the World, after the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
Oktapodi is a 2007 French computer-animated short film that originated as a Graduate Student Project from Gobelins L'Ecole de L'Image. The film is about a pair of love struck octopuses who through a series of comical events are separated and must find each other. Oktapodi was directed by Julien Bocabeille, François-Xavier Chanioux, Olivier Delabarre, Thierry Marchand, Quentin Marmier, and Emud Mokhberi. Music was composed by Kenny Wood.
BreakThru Films is an independent film production company based in Sopot in Poland. Founded in 2002 by Hugh Welchman and initially based in the United Kingdom. The company concentrated mostly in the production of short films, animation, documentary and live-stage shows but has since focused mainly on feature films. Their 2006 short film Peter and the Wolf was awarded an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and their 2017 feature film Loving Vincent was Academy nominated for Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis are a Canadian animation duo. On January 24, 2012, they received their second Oscar nomination, for the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) animated short film, Wild Life (2011). With their latest film, The Flying Sailor, they received several nominations and awards, including for the Best Canadian Film at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, and on January 24, 2023, they received a nomination for the 95th Academy Awards under the category Best Animated Short Film.
Michaela Pavlátová is a Czech animator, film director and teacher. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for Words, Words, Words (1991) and won the Short Film Golden Bear for Repete (1995). As a feminist experimental animator Michaela's work explores themes of sex, gender, philosophy and relationality. Beyond her independent work she worked as the art director for Wildbrain Inc. She currently teaches animation at the Academy of Performing Arts, film and TV School in Prague. Michaela has also taught at the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague, the Academy of Art College, Computer Arts Institute in San Francisco and at Harvard University in Prague.
Feast is a 2014 American 2D animated romantic comedy short film written and directed by Patrick Osborne from a story of Raymond S. Persi and Nicole Mitchell, and produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It made its world premiere on June 10, 2014, at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and debuted in theaters with Big Hero 6 on November 7, 2014. The short is about a Boston Terrier named Winston, his experiences bonding with his owner, James, over the food they share and his owner's relationship with a waitress named Kirby.
Cilia van Dijk Lieshout was a Dutch film producer. Her film work includes DaDa, Frieze Frame, I Move, so I Am, The Last Words of Dutch Schultz and Anna & Bella. Anna & Bella earned her an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film as producer.
Nedeljko Dragić is a Croatian director, animator, cartoonist and illustrator. Since 1953 he has been a cartoonist and had exhibitions and published a book called Lexicon for Illiterate People in 1966. In 1960 he began working as a designer and animator at Zagreb Film, contributing to the works of N. Kostelac, I. Vrbanić, B. Dovniković and others. Since 1965 he has owned the rights to the movie Elegy and has become one of the most important representatives of the Zagreb School of Animation.

The duo's first animated theatrical short since their 1993 Oscar-winning film Bob's Birthday, the film centres on a group of animals who meet weekly for a group psychotherapy session in the offices of psychiatrist Dr. Clement.
Daughter is a 2019 Czech short animated drama film directed by Daria Kashcheeva. The film received 38 awards during half a year after its premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, including the Annecy Cristal for the best film in the graduation films category, and a Student Academy Award. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
