The Nicosia Music Society was established in 1971 as "Zenon" choir of Larnaca by composer and Professor of Music Michael Hadjiloizou, a certified choir director and the first Cypriot to compose operas/melodramas, who has since been the Society's president and artistic director.
NMS is an officially registered organization under the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and it is run by a five-member board of directors. It includes:
According to its constitution, NMS's basic pursuit is the projection of Greek-Cypriot music creation through all artistic expression.
The chorus has appeared in over 800 performances on radio and television stations, in religious, patriotic and social events, concerts, and festivals.
The Society has made numerous trips abroad, touring major cities in Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
Under the direction of Mr. Hadjiloizou, NMS has published three original records: i. Του Λαού και της Πατρίδας ("Tou Laou kai tis Patridas", Of the People and Fatherland), ii. Ελλήνων Μαρτυρία ("Ellinon Martyria", Greek Confession), iii. Ορθοδόξων Μαρτυρία ("Orthodoxon Martyria", Orthodox Confession).
NMS is the organizer of the Annual Cyprus Christmas and Religious Song Festival, which is the biggest Christmas event and the oldest festival in Cyprus.
The first Cypriot organization to present complete operas/melodramas in Cyprus written by a Cypriot composer (Michalis Hadjiloizou) and performed by Cypriot artists:
Other special moments include the world premiers of Michalis Hadjiloizou's musical transformations of Dionysios Solomos' Ελεύθεροι Πολιορκημένοι ("Eleftheri Poliorkimeni", Free Besieged) and Kostis Palamas' Ο Δωδεκάλογος του Γύφτου ("O Dodekalogos tou Gyftou", The Twelve Words of the Gypsy), and the composer's own Καρπασία (Karpasia), Επιτάφιος Θρήνος ("Epitafios Thrinos", Epitaph Lamentation), the Liturgy of Saint John the Chrysostom, the Wedding Liturgy, and numerous of his original Cypriot Suites.
Fixed annual appearances include: 1. Cyprus Christmas and Religious Song Festival, 2. Artistic Tea, 3. Encomium – Epitaph Lamentation on Great Friday, 4. Annual Concert, and 5. International Tour in the summer.
NMS's repertoire stretches from Byzantine/sacred works to popular songs and from operas/melodramas to traditional folk music.
Manos Hatzidakis was a Greek composer and theorist of Greek music, widely considered as one of the greatest Greek songwriters of all time. His legacy and contribution is widespread among the works of contemporary Greek music, through the second half of the 20th and into the 21st century. He was also one of the main proponents of the "Éntekhno" form of music . In 1960, he received an Academy Award for Best Original Song for his song Never on Sunday from the film of the same name.
Michael "Mikis" Theodorakis is a Greek composer and lyricist who has contributed to contemporary Greek music with over 1000 works.

This page includes the discography of singer Despina Vandi. Vandi began a musical career in 1994 after signing with Minos EMI. She released two albums with little success, Gela Mou (1994) and Esena Perimeno (1996), before beginning an exclusive collaboration with composer Phoebus, which would eventually become one of the most successful partnerships in Greek history, and striking commercial success with her third and fourth albums Deka Endoles (1997) and Profities (1999), the latter which reached multi-platinum status. In the 2000s, Vandi and Phoebus began experimenting with more contemporary, radio-friendly pop influences in combination with laiko repertoire to much initial success. Her single "Ipofero" (2000) became the best-selling Greek single of all time ; after the success Vandi and Phoebus signed to new-found independent label Heaven Music with Gia (2001) remaining the label's biggest sales success, and one of the biggest-selling albums of all time in Greece. For the sales of Gia, Vandi became the first of four artists recording in Greece to receive a World Music Award for "World's Best Selling Greek Artist". With Gia earning success in neighboring markets as well, Vandi embarked on a career abroad briefly to some mild success; she became the first Greek artist to chart on any Billboard chart, reaching number one on the Hot Dance Airplay Chart for 2 weeks and 39 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart, although her later singles proved less successful. Vandi released her first live album in 2003 before taking a maternity leave after having her first child. During this time, both her former and current label released a number of compilations and video albums to capitalize on her recent marketability. Vandi returned with another multi-platinum record, Stin Avli Tou Paradeisou, before another maternity leave. 10 Hronia Mazi (2007) was released as a celebration of her 10-year collaboration with Phoebus. In 2009 Vandi and Phoebus announced that they were leaving Heaven Music in favor of a new label founded by Phoebus. The biggest music channel in Greece, MAD TV, in tribute to the 10 years since its foundation called Despina Vandi as the biggest female Greek star in Greek music. Vandi has sold over 1 million records.
Michalis Hatzigiannis is a popular Cypriot recording artist. From 2000 to 2010, Hatzigiannis has received over 30 certifications in Greece alone, making him one of the most successful artists of the decade. Hatzigiannis is also known for representing Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998. In 2010, Hatzigiannis released his first English language album in Europe. In 2010, Forbes listed Hatzigiannis as the 22nd most powerful and influential celebrity in Greece and fifth highest ranked singer.
I prova tou nifikou is a Greek album by composer Vassilis Dimitriou with singers Marinella and Pemi Zouni, which was also the soundtrack of the same titled popular Greek TV series that aired on ANT1 from October 6, 1995 on Fridays, directed by Kostas Koutsomytis and created by Vaggelis Goufas, based on the novel of the same name written by Ntora Giannakopoulou. It was released in November 1995 by Minos EMI in Greece and Cyprus. All music and lyrics are by Vassilis Dimitriou.
Ivi Adamou is a Greek-Cypriot singer. She was born and raised in Agia Napa, Cyprus and currently resides in Alexandroupoli, Greece. Adamou rose to recognition in Greece and Cyprus following her participation in the second season of the Greek version of The X Factor, where she was under the mentorship of Giorgos Theofanous. Right after her elimination from the X Factor, Adamou secured a recording contract with Sony Music Greece. She gained further recognition from her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, where she represented Cyprus with the song "La La Love".

The Famagusta derby refers to the Famagusta's local derby, football matches played between Anorthosis Famagusta and Nea Salamis Famagusta. It is one of the rivalries of Cypriot football. The rivalry is also indicative of social, cultural and political differences.
