Nieuw Rotterdam was the capital of the Nickerie District in Suriname, built on the right bank of the Nickerie River. Around 1875, this town got flooded by the sea. In 1879, on the left bank of the Nickerie River, the current capital Nieuw Nickerie was built, and Nieuw Rotterdam was formally abolished as a town a century later on 8 August 1979. [1]
The settlement was built around 1820, and peaked in the 1860s. The town laid on the right bank of the mouth of the river Nickerie, on a narrow strip of land between the river and the Atlantic Ocean at a point called Cordonspunt.
The town was largely populated by traders who trade proficient with the neighboring Guyana, and was called "Eldorado of the smugglers". [2] Nieuw Rotterdam was built in two perpendicular streets, including the Kerkstraat, which ran from south to north and ended with the tower of the church. [3] The council also had several houses, a fortified military post and barracks. [4]
The first storm came in 1866, and in 1875 there was another, which marks the end of Nieuw Rotterdam. [5]

Tapanahoni is a resort in Suriname, located in the Sipaliwini District. Its population at the 2012 census was 13,808. Tapanahoni is a part of Sipaliwini which has no capital, but is directly governed from Paramaribo. Tapanahony is an enormous resort which encompasses a quarter of the country of Suriname. The most important town is Diitabiki which is the residence of the granman of the Ndyuka people since 1950, and the location of the oracle.

Within the capital city of Paramaribo, a resort entails a neighbourhood, in other cases it is more akin to a municipality, consisting of a central place with a few settlements around it. Meerzorg is a town in Suriname, located on the eastern bank of the Suriname River, directly opposite the capital Paramaribo. Its population at the 2012 census was 12,405. Since 2000 it has been connected to Paramaribo by the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge, named after the former President Jules Wijdenbosch.
The (northern) East-West Link is a road in Suriname between Albina in the eastern part of the country to Nieuw Nickerie in the western part, via the capital city of Paramaribo. The southern East-West Link connects Paramaribo with Apoera via Bitagron. Construction of the road link started in the 1960s.
South Drain, also Zuiddrain, is a town in western Suriname. Since the pavement of 32 kilometres (20 mi) road section to Nieuw Nickerie, it is the final destination of the northern East-West Link. The European Union funded the reconstruction, which started in 2007, with 13.2 million euro. The section was opened on 30 April 2010. There is a jeep trail between South Drain and Apoera, connecting the Northern East-West Link with the Southern East-West Link. Contrary to earlier plans, the pavement of this road is not imminent.
Hamptoncourtpolder or is a settlement in the Nickerie District of northern Suriname, about 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) from the district capital, Nieuw Nickerie. In 1821, it started as a sugarcane plantation on the Nickerie River, and was named after Hampton Court Palace. In the beginning of the 20th century, it was subdivided in plots, and has been mainly used for rice cultivation. The name was also changed to Hamptoncourtpolder. Notable people who have worked or resided in Hamptoncourtpolder include Kayman Sankar, a cricketer and politician, his son Beni Sankar, an athlete and businessman, and Isahak Basir, a former member of the National Assembly of Guyana.
Ronnie Brunswijk is a Surinamese ex-rebel leader, politician, and businessman. After having served in the early 1980s as the personal body guard of Dési Bouterse, who overthrew the government in 1980 in a military coup, Brunswijk left him and formed the Surinamese Liberation Army, better known as the Jungle Commando.
