The Nigeria Women Football League is the body responsible for organization the top three tiers of women's association football in Nigeria. They organize the NWFL Premiership, NWFL Championship and NWFL Nationwide leagues. Historically, the Nigeria Football Federation appoints the executive board for the NWFL.

History

Since its inception, women's football in Nigeria was usually governed as a department of the NFF empowered to administer the leagues. Executive members and leaders of such committees included Gina Yesibo, Bola Ngozi Jegede and Haijia Omidiran. However, the Nigeria Women Football League was inaugurated as an institution capable of running its affairs using a more independent approach. Dilichukwu Onyedinma was appointed as the first chairperson of the body.

Nkechi Justina Nwaogu, is a Nigerian politician and banker, founder and CEO Libra Investment. She is the former Chairman Governing Council and Pro Chancellor University of Calabar. Nwaogu was the Member representing Osisioma Ngwa, Ugwunagbo and Obi Ngwa Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007. In 2007 she was elected as the Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District. In 2011 she was re-elected for a second tenure in office.

The NWFL Premiership (formerly Nigeria Women Premier League) is the top-level league for women's association football in Nigeria. It is the women's equivalent of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for male players. The Nigeria Women Football League(NWFL) organizes the Nigeria Women Premier League and the Nigeria Women Pro-league. In November 2017, Aisha Falode was elected chairperson of the league board, and was officially designated in January 2017.

Women's football in Nigeria has been increasing in popularity for many years. The Nigerian Women's Championship is funded by the government to improve the Nigeria women's national football team. Many females in Nigeria face prejudice for playing the sport.

Onome Ebi is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Nigerian club Abia Angels and the Nigeria women's national team. In 2023 she became the first African footballer, male or female, to play in 6 FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Rivers Angels F.C. is a Nigerian professional football club based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in Nigeria. They play in the Nigeria Women Premier League, the top flight in the national female soccer league pyramid.

Amaju Melvin Pinnick is a Nigerian football administrator, who was president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) from 2014 to 2022. He was elected NFF president in September 2014 and reelected on 20 September 2018. He was also First Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from September 2018 to July 2019, and a member of the Organising Committee for FIFA competitions.

The 2016 Nigeria Women Premier League was scheduled to start in February 2016, but was moved to 21 May, 2016. A total of 18 teams were registered for the season. The teams are divided into two groups of nine each. The winner of each abridged league will meet at the end of the season to determine the overall winner of the league. The Nigeria Women Premier League is one of the league competitions administered by the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) board.

The 2017 Nigeria Women Premier League began on March 25, 2017. The date was fixed during the congress for women football league system in Nigeria on February 22, 2017, in Abuja, which had the Minister for Sports, Solomon Dalung in attendance. Martin White Doves, Tokas Queens, Capital City Doves and Taraba Queens were relegated from the previous season. Heartland Queens of Owerri and Sadaatu Kolo Amazons of Niger State were promoted to the elite division. Rofiat Sule, the top scorer of the last two seasons and Evelyn Nwabuoku, captain of the national team amongst others were signed by Rivers Angels F.C. In March 2017, previously relegated Capital City Doves were re-added to the league, increasing the number of teams to seventeen. On 24 March, COD United Amazons F.C. and Capital City Doves were confirmed to be excluded from the league after failing to meet the registration deadline. This reduced the number of teams to fifteen.

Charity Chetachukwu Reuben is a Nigerian footballer, who plays for Bayelsa Queens. For the 2017 Nigeria Women Premier League, she scored eight goals, the most by any player in the league.

Edo Queens is a Nigerian women's football club based in Edo State, in southern Nigeria. They play in the top women's football league in Nigeria, the NWFL Premiership.
