The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is a non-profit, umbrella professional association of lawyers admitted to the Bar by Counsil of Legal Education in Nigeria. It is engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights, the rule of law and good governance in Nigeria. [1] The NBA has an observer status with the African Commission on Human and People's Rights, and a working partnership with many national and international non-governmental organizations concerned with similar goals in Nigeria and in Africa. [2]

The NBA is made up of 125 branches, three professional sections, two specialized institutes, six practice-cadre forums, and high-level leverage in the political society in Nigeria.

Its National Secretariat is managed from Abuja. Its organizational structure comprises a National Executive Committee, a National Officers/Management Board, sections, forums, committees, working groups and a National Secretariat with a manpower strengthening of 34 staff as at June 2010.

The current president of the Nigerian Bar Association is Yakubu Maikyau. and the current General Secretary is Adesina Adegbite. [3]

Barewa College is a college in Zaria, Kaduna State, northern Nigeria. Founded in 1921 by British Governor General Hugh Clifford, it was originally known as Katsina College. It switched its name to Kaduna College in 1938 and to Government College, Zaria in 1949 before settling on Barewa College. It is one of the largest boarding schools in Northern Nigeria and was the most-celebrated post-primary schools there up to the early 1960s. The school is known for the large number of elites from the region who attended and counts among its alumni include Tafawa Balewa who was Prime Minister of Nigeria from 1960 to 1966, four heads of state of Nigeria. The school is located along Gaskiya road in the Tukur -Tukur area of Zaria.

Kayode Oladele is a Nigerian human rights activist, lawyer and politician who was a member of the Nigerian House of Representatives representing Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, Ogun State, from 2015–2019. He was the Chairman of the House of Representatives' Committee on Financial Crimes and member of the House Committees on Justice, Human Rights, Rules and Business, Environment, Healthcare Services and Agricultural Institutions. Olumide Akpata is a Nigerian legal practitioner and politician. He was a senior partner and the Head of the Corporate and Commercial Practice Group at Templars law firm in Nigeria until his resignation on 31 August 2023 to enable him to pursue partisan politics. He became the first non-Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 28 years to be elected president of the Nigerian Bar Association in July 2020.

The 2023 Sokoto State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Sokoto State, concurrent with elections to the Sokoto State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau is a Nigerian legal practitioner, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Y. C. Maikyau & Co. In July 2022, he was elected as the president of the Nigerian Bar Association.
