Night is a new-school folk band from Nepal. [1] The band is known for using traditional Nepali instruments in its songs. It aims to reintroduce traditional instruments of Nepal to the modern generation of Nepali-speaking audiences. [2]
Current members
Jason Kunwar, Ranav Adhikari and Niraj Shakya formed Night as a metal band in 2006. But over time, their interest shifted to Nepali folk instruments and folk music, and they became a folk music band. [3]
The band released singles initially, which became highly popular in Nepal. It released its first album, Ani Ukali Sangai Orali in 2014, its second album Jhalka Raya Buka in August 2017, and its third album Ramite- The Music Volume 1 in 2019. The band has established a solid fan base ranging from metalheads to the general public. Some band members have composed music for Nepali films such as Chhadke , Jhola and Suntali .
Night performed at the Shambala Festival in August 2015 and 2019, BBC Radio 3 in April 2016, the WOMEX showcase in October 2017, and Sommarscen Malmo, Ethno Krakow in 2018. [4] They also collaborated with A.R. Rahman on occasion of International Peace Day to produce a musical tribute. Apart from Nepal, Night also performed in many other countries. [5]
The music of Night is folk-based and echoes the pains of the economically marginalized sections of society. [6] The band members visit various parts of Nepal and collect folk tunes and instruments. Night aims to promote rare traditional musical instruments through its short documentary series Know Your Instruments on its YouTube channel and live concerts. [7] Some of the Nepali musical instruments used by Night are Sarangi, Piwnacha, Nagara (drums), Dhimay (drums), Paluwa (leaf), Tungna and Flute. [8] [9]

Music of Nepal refers to the various musical genres played and listened to in Nepal. With more than fifty ethnic groups in Nepal, the country's music is highly diverse. Genres like Tamang Selo, Chyabrung, Dohori, Adhunik Geet, Bhajan, Filmi music, Ghazal, Classical music, songs and Ratna music are widely played and popular, but many other less common genres are yet to be cataloged. Western musical genres like Rock, Metal, Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B also regularly feature on the Nepalese music charts. Most of the country's musical bands are based in the Kathmandu valley. Musical genres from Tibet and India have greatly influenced Nepalese music.
Music of Sikkim ranges from traditional Nepali folk music to Westernized pop music. The ethnic communities, Lepcha, Limbu, Bhutia, Kiratis and Nepalis constitute the music which is an ingrained part of Sikkimese culture.
The ektara is a one-stringed musical instrument used in the traditional music of the Indian subcontinent, and used in modern-day music of Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.
The Image Channel is a private television channel in Nepal. It is owned by Image Group of Companies, which also run FM station and located in Lazimpat, Kathmandu. It produces several kinds of news programs, talkshows, entertainment shows, teleserials, etc. Image Channel went on air with a 1+1⁄2-hour block through Nepal Television on 25 January 1997. Its initial programs were focused on pop music, women, celebrity and fashion. Programs such as Image Pop, Button & Trades, AM Guest and Srijana ko Sansar gained huge popularity among the audiences.
Nepathya is a Nepalese folk rock band that was formed in the early 1990s. Nepathya was formed by Deepak Rana, Bhim Poon and Amrit Gurung while studying in Kathmandu, Nepal. The band has enjoyed both commercial and critical success. Nepathya are known for their contemporary songs with strong ties to indigenous music and lyrics using dialects from rural Nepal.
Tara Devi Shrestha, professionally known as Tara Devi was a Nepalese singer. She is known as the "Nightingale of Nepal", having recorded over 4,000 songs during her lifetime. Much of her music revolved around the themes of patriotism and love.
The madal or maadal is a Nepalese folk musical instrument. The madal is used mainly for rhythm-keeping in Nepalese folk music. It is very popular and widely used as a hand drum in Nepal. The madal has a cylindrical body with a slight bulge at its center and heads at both ends, one head larger than the other. It is usually played horizontally in a seated position, with both heads played simultaneously.
The Nepali Sarangi is a Nepali folk instrument. It is a chordophone played by bowing. Traditionally in Nepal, the Sarangi was only played by people of Gandarbha or Gaine caste, who sing narrative tales and folk song, however, in present days, its popularity extends beyond the Gandharba community and is widely used and played by other caste members as well. It has also garnered much interest in other music genres, such as Nepali rock and film music. While the Sarangi has become the quintessential Gandharba instrument, its counterpart, the arbajo, which is a plucked lute, has fallen into obscurity.
Nabin K Bhattarai is a Nepali singer, songwriter, and composer know for his work in Nepalese music industry.
The arbajo is a Nepali four-string lute used as a rhythm instrument. It is the traditional instrument of the Gandarbha caste of musical performers, and is considered a companion to the Nepali sarangi. The Gandarbhas consider the aarbajo to be the "male instrument", the sarangi the "female." The aarbajo is used less than in the past, and been replaced by the sarangi, which was considered in 1999 to have superseded the aarbajo in common use.
Rajesh Payal Rai is a Nepalese singer and actor. he is known as a singer in the Nepali music industry. He has done playback singing for more than 250 Nepali movies. In addition, he has recorded several private albums such as Darshan Namaste, Rai is King,Kamana,Jadau,Just For You,Murchana,Baiguni rahechau Mayale,Nigah,Asewaro,Love Letter,Syamuna etc. He has sung [[Japanese language|Japanese],Assamese] and Bhojpuri songs as well. He performed on a world wide tour and won several music awards from 1995-2015.He also participated in Melancholy, an environmental song conceptualized, written, composed and directed by Environmentalist Nipesh DHAKA and performed by 365 Nepali artists setting the Guinness World Records.
Kutumba is an instrumental folk Nepalese band. It only uses Nepalese traditional musical instruments such as bamboo flutes, sarangi, madal, tungna, dhol, jhyamta, arbajoo, dhime, dhyangro, damphu, khin, and singing bowl. The band recorded a single for season 6 of Coke Studio Pakistan, which aired in late 2013. They have collaborated with other Nepali artists such as Navneet Aditya Waiba, Satya Aditya Waiba, Albatross, Hari Maharjan, 1974 AD and Astha Tamang Maskey. They competed in the AI Song Contest 2021 alongside Diwas, Chepang, and Hari Maharjan with the song "Dreaming of Nepal", placing 17th with 15 points.
Bipul Chettri is an Indian singer-songwriter who sings in the Nepali language and plays Himalayan folk music with a contemporary touch. His debut album, Sketches of Darjeeling, was released in July 2014 and his follow-up album, Maya in 2016 and six singles 'Basant', 'Gahiro Gahiro', 'Ashish', 'Teesta', 'Mughlan', 'Neela Akash' and 'Salala' in the following years. His EP, 'Samaya' was released in 2021. He is based in New Delhi, India.
Folk Roots is the second studio album by Nepali folk band Kutumba. It is contains instrumentals of old Nepali songs and Nepali folk songs which are covered, remastered and improvised by the band. The album is produced and marketed by SAC Music International. It is one of Kutumba's most famous albums that introduces old songs to the new young generation. The band has improvised these old songs and produced it in better quality preserving these immortal Nepali songs for the new generation. The album features a 9:00 minutes long instrumental of "Asarai Mahinama" and instrumentals of other famous folk songs like "Sindhuli Gadi", "Ful Ko Thunga" and others. As their name, Kutumba is all about bringing together traditional folk tunes and instruments with new and improvised sounds and ideas.
Kandara Band or Kandara is a musical group from Pokhara, Nepal. The band formed in 1994 and takes its name after the Nepalese word for "a gorge or a cave in the middle of remote hills or mountains".
Navneet Aditya Waiba is an Indian singer who primarily sings in Nepali-language and the daughter of the late Hira Devi Waiba, the pioneer of Nepali folk music. Navneet and younger brother Satya Aditya Waiba (producer/manager) are the only artists in the Nepali folk music genre who sing and produce authentic traditional Nepali folk songs without adulteration or modernisation using mostly organic and traditional Nepali music instruments.
Tamang Selo is a genre of Nepali folk song sung by the Tamang people of Nepal and is widely popular among the Nepali-speaking community in Nepal, in India, and around the world. It is usually accompanied by the Tamang instruments: Damphu, Madal and Tungna. A Selo could be very catchy and lively or slow and melodious and is usually sung to express love, sorrow and stories of day to day life.

Cobweb is a hard rock band from Patan, Nepal. The band was formed in 1993 by a group of school friends in Patan by releasing their first album "Anjaan". The first album was not a success. The second album Cobweb was received well with the songs like "Maryo ni Maryo" which shaped a way for Nepalese rock in the mainstream. The band is considered a trend setter in modern Nepalese music industry.
