Visual arts of Chicago refers to paintings,prints,illustrations,textile art,sculpture,ceramics and other visual artworks produced in Chicago or by people with a connection to Chicago. Since World War II,Chicago visual art has had a strong individualistic streak,little influenced by outside fashions. "One of the unique characteristics of Chicago," said Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts curator Bob Cozzolino,"is there's always been a very pronounced effort to not be derivative,to not follow the status quo." The Chicago art world has been described as having "a stubborn sense ... of tolerant pluralism." However,Chicago's art scene is "critically neglected." Critic Andrew Patner has said,"Chicago's commitment to figurative painting,dating back to the post-War period,has often put it at odds with New York critics and dealers." It is argued that Chicago art is rarely found in Chicago museums;some of the most remarkable Chicago artworks are found in other cities.
The Boston School was a group of Boston-based painters active in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Often classified as American Impressionists,they had their own regional style,combining the painterliness of Impressionism with a more conservative approach to figure painting and a marked respect for the traditions of Western art history. Their preferred subject matter was genteel:portraits,picturesque landscapes,and young women posing in well-appointed interiors. Major influences included John Singer Sargent,Claude Monet,and Jan Vermeer. Key figures in the Boston School were Edmund C. Tarbell,Frank Weston Benson,and William McGregor Paxton,all of whom trained in Paris at the Académie Julian and later taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Their influence can still be seen in the work of some contemporary Boston-area artists.

She began her long arts career working with the New York Museum of Modern Art,while making work at night. She co-founded the A.I.R. gallery and worked with other groups to advocate for herself and other female artists,Black women in particular. Her work explores texture,color,structures,and the process of making art;it is often political,addressing the intersecting issues of racism,feminism,violence,slavery,and exploitation. She has created abstract paintings,collages,"video drawings," and "process art" and has exhibited around the world.

She was active with the Richmond Printmaking Workshop and served on the Advisory Board of Studio Two-Three in Richmond,Virginia. She was a member of the Summer 2007 graphics faculty at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and was a visiting artist and lecturer in the Lyceum program at Emory and Henry College.
