No Hot Ashes were a British "post pop" disco funk [1] band from Stockport, Greater Manchester, [2] [3] consisting of Isaac Taylor (vocals/guitar), Luigi Di Vuono (guitar), Jack Walsh (bass) and Matt Buckley (drums). The band released several singles followed by an EP, Skint Kids Disco, before releasing their debut album Hardship Starship in 2019. [4] In March 2020, the band announced an indefinite hiatus and that they would be playing two final shows the following month. [5] These were later delayed until March 2021 and eventually cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [6]

History

Formation

Drummer Matt Buckley and guitarist Luigi Di Vuono met in 2012 while the pair were studying music together. By 2013 they had been joined by bassist Jack Walsh and vocalist/lyricist Isaac Taylor, who they met on a school bus. The group regularly practiced in Buckley's garage, where they would perform for friends. [7] The band have mentioned that they regret picking the name No Hot Ashes, with Di Vuono saying “It’s off wheelie bins, it’s the worst name ever, we hate it”, but decided that changing it on all of the band's social media platforms would be too much of a hassle. [2] [8]

Skint Kids Disco EP and Hardship Starship

The band released several singles between 2014 and 2017 and were featured on BBC Radio Manchester, BBC Radio 6 and ITV News. In 2017 they released Skint Kids Disco EP [9] [10] and performed at festivals and events across the UK including the Isle of Wight Festival. The title track Skint Kids Disco, was featured in the third series of acclaimed BBC drama series The A Word, which began in May 2020. [11]

After touring with bands Blossoms, Spring King, The Amazons, and Prides, No Hot Ashes announced their debut album Hardship Starship in 2019. [12] The album was released on the 15th of August, to generally favourable reviews. [13] [14] [15]

Hiatus

On March 12, 2020, the band announced via their social media that they would be "ending their journey" but "not forever", citing difficulty in maintaining a balance between real-life issues and the pressures of the band. [5] They had originally planned to play two final "farewell" shows in April 2020, however these were delayed until March 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually cancelled. [6]

In October 2022 Systems Music For Home Defence was released, which Sci-Fi Steven has described as the band's "rave" album.

AbsolutePunk gave an extremely positive review with a rating of 95%, calling the album a "masterpiece". The pre-orders in the band's webstore featured eleven packages, ranging from $10 to $9,999. Symphony Soldier is digitally available on iTunes, and only available as physical CDs from the band's webstore. The band's latest work, an EP titled Lock Me Up, was released on April 29, 2014. They have not released any new material since 2014, leaving the future of the band uncertain.

Skint & Demoralised are a British alternative indie/pop act, fronted by lyricist Matt Abbott from Wakefield, West Yorkshire and produced by David Gledhill from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. After spending six years pursuing individual projects, Skint & Demoralised announced a new single, which was released on Fierce Panda in spring 2019.

Bassist and keyboardist Cole Whittle was a part of the band from when it started in 2015 to when it went on hiatus in 2018. DNCE's music is mainly dance-rock, dance-pop, pop rock, and funk-pop. The band signed with Republic Records, who released their debut single, "Cake by the Ocean", which was released on September 18, 2015. The song reached the top 10 on several charts, including on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number nine. Their debut extended play (EP), Swaay, was released on October 23, 2015. Their self-titled debut studio album was released on November 18, 2016. Their second EP, People to People, was released on June 15, 2018. They were also nominated for Favorite New Artist for the 2016 Kids' Choice Awards and Best Song to Lip Sync and Best Anthem for the 2016 Radio Disney Music Awards. The group performed at the 2017 Fashion Meets Music Festival. In February 2022, DNCE returned after their hiatus with a collaboration with Kygo titled "Dancing Feet".
