No Simple Way Home also known as Nie ma prostej drogi do domu [1] is a 2022 South Sudanese-South African documentary film written and directed by South Sudanese filmmaker Akuol de Mabior on her documentary directorial debut. [2] The film was premiered at the 2022 International Filmfestival Amsterdam. [3] The film encounters the daily struggles of people in South Sudan and recounts the story of the most prominent political family in South Sudan's history. It became the first ever South Sudanese film to be screened at the Berlin International Film Festival. [4]

Synopsis

The documentary owes tribute to filmmaker Akuol de Mabior's own father John Garang de Mabior who was widely acknowledged and recognised for his prominent role in pioneering the liberation movement South Sudan People's Defence Forces for nearly two decades or so in the Southern part of Sudan (which is now known as a separate independent country in the name of South Sudan which gained independence in 2011) and he is currently considered as the founding father of South Sudan who had eventually died in a helicopter crash in 2005 just three weeks after taking oath as Vice President of Sudan and he would later be hailed as a national hero of South Sudan. [5] Akuol was just 16 when her father died in the helicopter crash. The documentary also gives spotlight on former Vice President of South Sudan Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior who is dubbed as the motherfigure of South Sudan. [6] After growing up in exile, filmmaker Akuol de Mabior returns home to South Sudan to follow her mother's journey into politics. When peace in South Sudan hangs in the balance, the filmmaker returns home from exile with her mother and sister. [7]

Production

The film was produced by Generation Africa in collaboration with Deutsche Welle Akademie, Robert Bosch Foundation, Social Transformation and Empowerment Projects (STEPS), Bertha Foundation, German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and German Cooperation. [8] [9]

The film was premiered at various international film festivals including Zanzibar International Film Festival 2022, Sheffield DocFest 2022, [10] San Francisco International Film Festival 2022, Durban International Film Festival 2022, [11] Encounters South African International Documentary Festival 2022, DOK.fest München 2022, [12] HotDocs 2022, [13] Cinéma du Réel 2022, 2022 Sydney Film Festival and in the panorama section at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival. Rebecca Nyandeng of Mabior is a South Sudanese politician. She has been one of the Vice Presidents of South Sudan in the unity government since February 2020. She served as the Minister of Roads and Transport for the autonomous government of Southern Sudan, and as an advisor for the President of South Sudan on gender and human rights from 2007 to 2014. She is the widow of Dr. John Garang de Mabior, the late first Vice President of Sudan and the President of the Government of South Sudan, and the mother of Akuol de Mabior. She is from the Dinka tribe of Twic East County of South Sudan.

Gadalla Gubara was a Sudanese cameraman, film producer, director and photographer. Over five decades, he produced more than 50 documentaries and three feature films. He was a pioneer of African cinema, having been a co-founder of both the Pan-African Federation of Filmmakers FEPACI and the FESPACO Film festival. His daughter, Sara Gubara, who is a graduate of Cairo Higher Institute of Cinema, Egypt, assisted him with his later film projects, after he had lost his eyesight. She is considered to be Sudan's first female film director.

Diana El Jeiroudi, is a Berlin-based, Syrian independent film director and producer. El Jeiroudi’s films as director were celebrated at many festivals, including the Venice Film Festival, IDFA, DokLeipzig, Visions du Réel, CPH:DOX… among others. Her producing credits include the Sundance 2023 film 5 Seasons of Revolution, the Cannes Film Festival 2014 selection Silvered Water, the IDFA 2013 selection The Mulberry House, among others. She was the first Syrian to be a juror in Cannes Film Festival in 2014, when she was part of the first Documentary Film Award jury in the festival. Together with her partner Orwa Nyrabia, El Jeiroudi was also the first Syrian known to be invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2017. El Jeiroudi was also a co-founder of DOX BOX International Documentary Film Festival in Syria and DOX BOX e.V. non-profit association in Germany.

Beats of the Antonov is a documentary film released in 2014. It is a Sudanese-South African coproduction, directed by Sudanese filmmaker Hajooj Kuka and produced by Hajooj Kuka and Steven Markovitz. The film documents the Sudan–SRF conflict in the Blue Nile and Nuba Mountains regions, focusing in particular on the role of music in helping the affected communities to sustain themselves culturally and spiritually in the face of the ongoing conflict.

The International Documentary Film Festival Munich has been held annually in Munich, Germany since 1985. Since 2001 it has been organised by the association Internationales Dokumentarfilmfestival München e.V. together with the Filmstadt München association. The festival focuses on socially relevant and artistically valuable documentary films.

Sudan Independent Film Festival(SIFF) is an annual festival for Sudanese and international films in Khartoum. Since 2014, it has been organised between January 21–27 by the Sudan Film Factory. Since its beginning, it has served as a showcase for new Sudanese films and as an opportunity for networking for film professionals in East Africa and the wider region.

Home Again is a 2022 Gambian documentary film written and directed by Babucarr Manka. The film eloborates about the migration crisis and depicts the circumstances which have forced the Africans to migrate to European nations in pursuit of better career opportunities and access to high quality of life. The film reveals how the International Organization for Migration organizes the repatriation process of the African immigrants to send them back to their own home nations who all arrived to the major European nations as refugees. The film was screened as a world premiere on 7 May 2022 in the African Encounters category at the Internationales Dokumentarfilmfestival München and it was the only Gambian film to have been premiered during the 2022 edition of the DOK.fest Munich.

African Moot is a 2022 South African documentary film written and directed by lawyer turned filmmmaker Shameela Seedat. The film is based on a set of aspiring lawyers who compete in the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition by representing the top law schools from their respective nations and they turn up for the event which is held in Gaborone, Botswana for a duration of one week at the African Court of Human Rights where social topics are taken up for debates which are deemed as fictional court cases. According to The Africa Report, it was ranked among top ten most notable African films of 2022.

Lend Me Your Voice is a 2021 Rwandan documentary short film directed by Claudine Ndimbira. The film was screened as a world premiere on 7 May 2022 in the African Encounters category at the Internationales Dokumentarfilmfestival München and was just one of two films from Generation Africa project to be premiered at the 2022 DOK.fest Munich with the other being Home Again. The film was also screened at the Sheffield DocFest in June 2022. The film was also aired on Arte.

No U-Turn is a 2022 Nigerian biographical documentary film written and directed by Ike Nnaebue. The film reflects the real issues regarding migration and the difficulties confronted by the African immigrants.

From Sudan to Argentina is a 2022 Argentine documentary, written and directed by Ricardo Preve. The feature documentary tells the story of the Argentine Historian and Egyptologist, Dr. Abraham Rosenvasser, as leader of the French-Argentine archeology mission which was promoted by UNESCO, and which took place in the north of Sudan between 1961 and 1963. The film was shown in various international film festivals, and earned awards and nominations.

<i>Goodbye Julia</i> 2023 Sudanese feature film

Goodbye Julia is a 2023 Sudanese drama film directed by Mohamed Kordofani. It is Kordofani's first feature film and the first film from Sudan ever to be presented in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival.
