Noelia Vera Ruiz-Herrera (born 27 October 1985) [1] is a Spanish journalist and former politician of the Podemos party. She was a member of the Congress of Deputies from 2015 to her resignation in 2021, and was the Secretary of State for Equality from 2020 to 2021.

Biography

Born in Cádiz, Vera was raised on a farm in nearby El Puerto de Santa María. She earned a bachelor's degree from the Complutense University of Madrid and a master's degree from King Juan Carlos University, both in the field of journalism. She worked at various media outlets in Spain, Argentina and Colombia, including Diario de Cádiz , CNN+, Telemadrid and EFE. In 2014, she became editor and occasional host of La Tuerka , a discussion show anchored by Podemos founder Pablo Iglesias. [1] [2]

Vera was chosen as Podemos's lead candidate for the 2015 Spanish general election in the Cádiz constituency, [3] and was elected. [4] Having been re-elected three times, in January 2020 she was made Secretary of State for Equality by Minister of Equality Irene Montero. [5]

In June 2021, as Ione Belarra succeeded Iglesias as leader of Podemos, Vera rose to third position in the party's national executive, the Citizens' Council. [6]

In October 2021, Vera resigned her seat and government post, and retired from politics for personal reasons. She was succeeded by Juan Antonio Delgado and Ángela Rodríguez, respectively. [7]

It started operations on July 4, 2023. The number was selected as a reference to June 28, International LGBT Pride Day.

The 2021 Podemos state assembly—officially the 4th Citizen Assembly, and more informally referred to as Vistalegre IV—was held during 12 and 13 June 2021. The assembly took place for the first place outside of Vistalegre, taking place in a venue in Alcorcón. Ione Belarra was elected Secretary-General with over 80% of the votes.

The Ley Trans is a 2023 law that permits gender self-identification in Spain. The law allows for free change of legal sex for people over 16 years, while requiring parent authorisation for people over 14 years and judge approval for those over 12. It also bans efforts to change people's gender expression, sexual orientation or sexual identity through conversion therapy. The law also covers other aspects of LGBTI rights. The law does not allow people to switch to a non-binary gender, which does not exist in Spanish law.
