Imphal is the capital city of the Indian state of Manipur. It is the second largest city in Northeast India after Guwahati. The metropolitan centre of the city contains the ruins of Kangla Palace, the royal seat of the former Kingdom of Manipur, surrounded by a moat. Spread over parts of the districts of Imphal West and Imphal East, the former contains the majority of the city's area and population. Imphal is part of the Smart Cities Mission under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region is a Government of India ministry, established in September 2001, which functions as the nodal Department of the Central Government to deal with matters related to the socio-economic development of the eight States of Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. The Fawley branch line, also known as the Waterside line, is a standard-gauge railway line to Fawley, in the English county of Hampshire. It is on the opposite side of Southampton Water from the city of Southampton itself, in an area known as Waterside. For 40 years a passenger service operated, but this was withdrawn except for the occasional enthusiasts' railtour. The line serves the freight needs of Marchwood Military Port, having also served the same function for Fawley Refinery until 2016.

Mahisasan is a border railway station and a defunct railway transit facility point on the India–Bangladesh border in Karimganj district in the Indian state of Assam. The corresponding station on the Bangladesh side is Shahbajpur in Sylhet District. The border station is linked to Karimganj 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) away. The Mahisasan–Shahbajpur route has not been operational since December, 1996 due to lack of traffic.
The Bhanupli–Leh line is an under-construction electrified railway track connecting Bhanupli in Punjab state to Leh in Ladakh union territory of India. Once complete, the 489 km (304 mi) long, 1,676 mm wide gauge all-weather track will reduce travel time from New Delhi to Leh to 10 hours. Passing through seismic zone IV and V at an elevation of 600 m (2,000 ft) to 5,360 m (17,590 ft) above sea level, the line will surpass China's Qinghai–Tibet railway to become the highest railway in the world upon completion.
Inpui or Puiron is a Naga language spoken in different villages of Senapati district, Tamenglong district, Noney District, and Imphal district in Manipur, and in some areas in Nagaland, India. Speakers of Inpui and Rongmei are subsumed under single ethnic group Kabui. But the two major ethnic groups have different languages and identity. Even though they are considered to be cognate ethnic group. The speakers of this language use Meitei language as their second language (L2) according to the Ethnologue.

Bairabi is one of the railhead of Mizoram and connected with a broad-gauge line. The 84.25 km broad-gauge railway line from Katakhal Junction to Bairabi, was completed on 21 March 2016.

The station proposal includes two platforms. The station will serve as a major station on Jiribam–Imphal railway line. The Work on this rail line is expected to be finished in the year 2024 according to latest updates.
Phayeng railway station is a proposed railway station in Imphal West district, Manipur. Its code is PHYNG. It will serve Kangchup city. The proposed station includes two platforms. The work on this rail line is expected to be finished year 2019.

Haipou Jadonang Kambiron railway station is a railway station in Tamenglong district, Manipur. Its code is KBBP. It will serve Kambiron village. The station was renamed in honor of Haipou Jadonang, a freedom fighter of India and the founder of the Zeliangrong movement, in 2014. The work on this rail line is expected to be finished year 2019.
A large landslide occurred in Noney district of the Indian state of Manipur near the Tupul railway construction site on the night of 30 June 2022. It killed 58 people and three people were missing. Eighteen people were injured. Twenty-nine Indian Army personnel and 29 civilians were among the deceased. Of the missing three people, two were civilians and one was an Indian Army personnel.
