Noorderlicht (Dutch for "Northern Light") is a multifaceted and international platform for documentary photography. Based in Groningen, Netherlands, Noorderlicht organizes an annual photo festival, runs a photo gallery, a publishing house and provides an educational programme and discussions, lectures and masterclasses. [1]
Noorderlicht Photogallery was established in 1980. Ten years later, the Photofestival was launched, becoming one of the most important international photographic events. [2] In 1991, the festival became a biennale, until 2000, when it was restored as an annual event. From this date, the festival site has alternated between Groningen and Friesland.
Groningen is the capital city and main municipality of Groningen province in the Netherlands. Dubbed the "capital of the north", Groningen is the largest place as well as the economic and cultural centre of the northern part of the country; as of December 2021, it had 235,287 inhabitants, making it the sixth largest city/municipality in the Netherlands and the second largest outside the Randstad.
Michael Shaowanasai is a Thai-American artist and actor who lives in Bangkok, Thailand. His works includes performance art, photography, video, film and installations. Openly gay, his works are often provocative, such as photographic portrait of himself as a Buddhist monk made up to look like a woman. Active as an artist since 1997, his works have featured in international exhibitions since 1999, and his work is held in major collections.
Larry Towell is a Canadian photographer, poet, and oral historian. Towell is known for his photographs of sites of political conflict in the Ukraine, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Standing Rock and Afghanistan, among others. In 1988, Towell became the first Canadian member of Magnum Photos.
