Nor-Shipping

Nor-Shipping is a maritime trade fair that has been held in Norway biennially since 1965. It is one of the leading international shipping events and an important meeting place and forum for the shipping industry. [1] It "remains one of the most pivotal and well-attended events of the marine and offshore calendar." [2] The other major international shipping fairs are Posidonia in Athens and the Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Technology (SMM) show in Hamburg. [3]

The week-long fair is organized by Norges Varemesse (Norway Trade Fairs) and held in Lillestrøm near Oslo in May or June. It features exhibitions, conferences, debates, product launches and social occasions. [4] The fair attracts shipowners, ship builders, classification societies, technology suppliers, shipbrokers, innovators, ship financiers and industry leaders.

During the trade fair week, the fair also presented an exhibition called Ocean Talent Camp (previously Nor-Shipping Campus) in the Oslo city center. It promotes careers within the industry and was visited by about 10,000 students at the 2013 event. [5]

In 2017 there were around 15,500 visitors at the event, plus 900 exhibiting companies from 48 countries, 19 of which had their own national pavilions. [6]

History

The predecessor to Nor-Shipping was Deck and Engine Room, held for the first time in the early 1960s by Norwegian Industrial Fairs (now Norway Trade Fairs) in cooperation with the magazine ‘‘Skip’’ (Ship). The first two times it was held, the event focused on local seafarers and their work on board local ships. Norwegian shipowner and magazine publisher Per Selvig saw the potential for an international shipping exhibition, and contacted Edvard Mowinckel-Larsen, then head of Norwegian Industrial Fairs, to propose a more international focus. Organized with the support of Selvig’s ‘‘Norwegian Shipping News’’ journal, the event was renamed International Shipping Exhibition and opened in Oslo during May 1965. A slump in maritime markets in the late 1960s meant that the next exhibition was not staged until late May 1968. The Nor-Shipping name was used for the third exhibition in 1971.

In the course of the four times the biennial event has been held since 2003, it has shifted focus from technology to becoming a meeting place for a wider spectrum of interests. [7]

Exhibition

A total of 22,500 square meters of exhibition space is spread over six halls and exhibitions are divided into six broad themes: IT and navigation; safety and rescue; shipbuilding and repair; maritime services and logistics; propulsion and machinery; maritime services and logistics; and innovation and venture. [7]

Conferences

The two Nor-Shipping conferences attract leading maritime industry personalities, both as participants, who take part in interviews and round-table discussions, and delegates. Former CNN International financial editor Todd Benjamin frequently hosts the interviews and discussions. [8]

Opening conference

The opening conference includes the presentation of the Nor-Shipping Awards. [9] Speakers at these conferences have included Tor Olav Trøim of Frontline, Peter Evensen from Teekay Corporation, [10] Andreas Sohmen-Pao of BW Group [11] and secretaries general of the International Maritime Organization. Some 1,000 attended the 2013 conference. [12]

Agenda Offshore conference

The Agenda Offshore conference was established in 2011 to acknowledge the link between shipping and the oil and gas industry. Speakers have included José Sergio Gabrielli, the CEO of Petrobras, Statoil CEO Helge Lund [13] and US Coast Guard Jeffrey G. Lantz, [14] as have National Oilwell Varco’s Pete Miller and John Ridgway from BP Shipping. Issues of interest to the offshore industry are debated here, such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Awards

The Nor-Shipping Awards include the Energy Efficiency Award, Next Generation Ship Award and Young Entrepreneur Award. The 2013 winners were respectively Fjord Lines’ Stavangerfjord, TOTE's 3,100 TEU containership and Tor M. Østervold of Norway’s ECOsubsea. [15]

Supporting events

Organizers have increasingly added supporting events to the trade fair week. “Nor-Shipping is as much known for its evening parties as for the growing number of daytime events.” [16] This includes its barbecue, “the largest event of its kind in Norway with 2,500 guests” [17] and the more recently established closing party, as well as Nor-Shipping Venture Forum and Nor-Shipping Shipowners’ Forum.

Erling Dekke Næss was a Norwegian shipowner and businessman. Næss was Deputy Head of Nortraship's New York office from 1942 to 1946. Næss was the initiator behind the OBO carrier. He is also credited as the proposer of the Norwegian International Ship Register, which allowed Norwegian shipowners to compete on an equal footing with flags of convenience.

Shipbroking is a financial service, which forms part of the global shipping industry. Shipbrokers are specialist intermediaries/negotiators between shipowners and charterers who use ships to transport cargo, or between buyers and sellers of vessels.

The American Bureau of Shipping is an American maritime classification society established in 1862. Its stated mission is to promote the security of life, property, and the natural environment, primarily through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine and offshore assets.

A ship classification society or ship classification organisation is a non-governmental organization that establishes and maintains technical standards for the construction and operation of ships and offshore structures. Classification societies certify that the construction of a vessel comply with relevant standards and carry out regular surveys in service to ensure continuing compliance with the standards. Currently, more than 50 organizations describe their activities as including marine classification, twelve of which are members of the International Association of Classification Societies.

<i>Prestige</i> oil spill 2002 environmental disaster off the coast of Galicia, Spain

The Prestige oil spill occurred off the coast of Galicia, Spain in November 2002, caused by the sinking of the 26-year-old, structurally deficient oil tanker MV Prestige, carrying 77,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil. During a storm, it burst a tank on 13 November, and French, Spanish, and Portuguese governments refused to allow the ship to dock. The vessel subsequently sank on 19 November, about 210 kilometres (130 mi) from the coast of Galicia. It is estimated that it spilled 60,000 tonnes or a volume of 67,000 m3 (17.8 million US gal) of heavy fuel oil.

Gard is a mutual company and operates around the world within marine insurance. It is the largest Protection & Indemnity insurer of the 12 P&I Clubs that are members of the International Group of P&I Clubs.

TradeWinds is the world's biggest shipping news service, publishing both online news and a printed weekly newspaper, that covers shipping as a global industry. TradeWinds is owned by the DN Media Group and is headquartered in Oslo. They also have an office in London at Wood Street.

The International Chamber of Shipping is one of the world's principal shipping organisations, representing around 80% of the world's merchant tonnage through membership by national shipowners' associations. It is concerned with maritime regulatory, operational and legal issues. Its membership includes over 40 national shipowner organisations.

The Norwegian Shipowners Association is an employers' organization and interest group for Norwegian shipping and offshore companies. The organization's primary fields are national and international industry policies, employer issues, competence and recruitment, environmental issues and innovation in addition to safety at sea.

The Hong Kong International Convention for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships, or Hong Kong Convention, is a multilateral convention adopted in 2009, which has not entered into force. The conference that created the convention was attended by 63 countries, and overseen by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award was established in 1999 by the explorer and scientist Thor Heyerdahl (1914–2002) and the Norwegian Shipowners' Association. The prize recognizes candidates from the shipping industry that have made an outstanding contribution to the environment. To qualify for the award, candidates must have demonstrated exceptional technical innovation and environmental work in correspondence with Thor Heyerdahl's spirit for the conservation of the marine environment.

BOKA Vanguard Semisubmersible heavy-lift ship

BOKA Vanguard is a semisubmersible heavy-lift ship owned and operated by Dockwise B.V. Dockwise Vanguard is the largest vessel of her type ever built, and is able to carry cargoes up to 110,000 tonnes. Dockwise Vanguard was designed to move offshore oil and gas facilities, but can also carry other ships and act as an offshore dry-dock facility.
