Norman Teague (born 1968) [1] is an American social practice artist, designer, [2] furniture maker, [3] [4] and educator. [5] Teague co-founded the Chicago-based design studio, blkHaUs Studios, [6] [7] and in 2019 went on to form his own Norman Teague Design Studios. In addition to his studio practices Teague currently resides as a professor in the school of industrial design at University of Illinois Chicago. [8]

Early life and education

Teague grew up on the South Side of Chicago in Bronzeville, [7] and he is African American. [1]

Originally interested in pursuing a career in architecture, Teague attended Harold Washington College. He went to further his studies at Colombia College Chicago, but after exposure to wood shop and smaller scale design he pivoted his focus to industrial Design. [9] Teague received an BA degree in product design from Colombia College Chicago in 2014. He then went on to pursue a master's degree in designed objects from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, which he received in 2016.

Career

In 2016, Teague co-founded with Fo Wilson the design studio blkHaUs Studios in Chicago. [10] [6] [7] Their work was focused on making public spaces in Chicago more inviting for the public. [10]

In 2019, he went on to form his own Norman Teague Design Studios. [11] [3] Teague's work seeks to use design to "empower brown and black communities". [8]

He is best known for his furniture, [12] some of which resides in the museum collection of The Art Institute of Chicago, [1] [5] and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). [13] He has also worked in performance art, installation art, [14] and sculpture. Teague has worked with notable collaborators such as Theaster Gates, and acted as a consultant on The Barack Obama Presidential Center with the firm Ralph Applebaum. [5] His work was in the 2021 Chicago Architecture Biennial. [14]

Her designs for the Viceroy hotel chain in the early 2000s have been noted for their influence on the design industry. She has designed properties for clients such as Gwen Stefani, Cameron Diaz and Stacey Snider, and served as a judge on all episodes of Bravo's Top Design reality contest in 2007 and 2008.

Christopher John Wilkinson was a British architect and co-founder of the architecture firm WilkinsonEyre. He was known for his techno-centric designs and execution of projects ranging from office spaces, factory floors, skyscrapers to botanical gardens. Some of his projects included the Magna Science Adventure Centre, Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Guangzhou International Finance Center, and the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.

Edward Lifson is an American journalist, architecture critic, and academic. He was the Director of Communications for the Pritzker Architecture Prize. He was also a domestic, foreign and war correspondent and bureau chief for NPR National Public Radio; and he created and hosted a radio show in Chicago called "Hello Beautiful!" to explore and tell stories of urban issues, architecture and design. Lifson is an Adjunct Instructor in the Media Center at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. For NPR, in the U.S. Lifson covered urban affairs, politics, economics, labor and arts and culture. In 1996, he established the National Public Radio Bureau in Berlin, Germany. In Europe, he covered the rebuilding of Berlin as a city and a national capital, European Union, post-Cold War politics, NATO, the launch of the euro, immigration issues, and Central Europe’s transition to democracy and capitalism. As a war correspondent, he reported extensively for NPR from Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Macedonia before and during the war in Kosovo. In addition to Berlin, he has lived for many years in Paris, Florence, Italy and in England. Lifson was the interim Director of the Shanghai-based American Academy in China, an urban design think tank and studio.
