Charter schools in the United States are primary or secondary education institutions that do not charge fees to pupils who take state-mandated exams. History

The school building, built in 1949, was originally St. John Cantius High School, closed in 1988. [4] The building later housed charter school I Can School Professor Avenue.

In May 2016, teachers at the school voted to unionize, joining the American Federation of Teachers. [5] The Center for Education Reform estimates that ten percent of charter school teachers belong to a union. [6]

The Center for Education Reform is an education reform organization located in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1993, CER is led by Jeanne Allen, Founder and CEO. The group publishes a yearly charter school law ranking and scorecard to analyze state-level laws and regulations regarding charter schools.

In March 2017, Accel Schools took over the charter management contract for Northeast Ohio College Preparatory School and six other I Can schools. [7]

Athletics

The school offers basketball and volleyball. The basketball team competes in the Division III Garfield Heights tournament, but is ineligible for the 2018-2019 year. [8]

The shooting of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams, or as it is sometimes known "137 shots", two homeless African American individuals, occurred in East Cleveland, Ohio on November 29, 2012, at the conclusion of a 22-minute police chase which started in downtown Cleveland. Thirteen police officers fired at Russell and Williams 137 times while they were in their car at a parking lot of a middle school. In May 2014, one of the officers involved, Michael Brelo, was charged with two counts of voluntary manslaughter, and was acquitted by a Cuyahoga County judge of the charges on May 23, 2015.

The Brownell School and Annex are three historic former public school buildings located on Sumner Street in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. The Queen Anne-style main building was designed by prominent local architect John Eisenmann, and erected from 1884 to 1885. The first annex was designed by noted local architect Frank Seymour Barnum, and completed in 1905. The second annex, also by Barnum, was finished in 1909. Several individuals of local and national importance were educated there or taught school there, and the building served as the first campus of Cuyahoga Community College in 1962. The building was sold to private owners in 1979, and the complex underwent a major renovation from 1983 to 1985.
