History

In March 1979 Northland Lutheran High School formed an association and called John Schultz as the first Administrator. With two teachers, freshman and sophomore classes were established that September. The first school, located in Merrill, Wisconsin, consisted of portable classrooms.

Crisis came in the form of instability and the uncertainty of a firm direction. To gain strength from a stronger church base, Northland relocated to a temporary facility in Wausau in 1987. A building owned by St. Mary Catholic Church of Wausau was its home for many years to come.

On August 22, 1999 Northland dedicated its first permanent facility in Kronenwetter, Wisconsin. [1]

Student demographics

Enrollment has ranged from 60 to 140 students. Students travel from Neillsville, Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Plover, Birnamwood, Tomahawk, Eagle River, Rhinelander, Merrill, Medford, Athens, Marathon, and Wausau areas. [1]

Being a Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod school, the ethnicity of the students is predominantly white of German descent (83%). The school has a large minority of Asian students(12%), mostly Hmong-Americans and Koreans. [1] Multi-racial Americans make up 2%, American Indians 2%, and Hispanics of any race 1% of the student body. [2]

The Lutheran High School of Milwaukee was a Lutheran high school operated by congregations of the Missouri and Wisconsin synods in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, area from 1903 to 1955. Started in an unused classroom of Immanuel Lutheran School with 18 students, it moved in 1904 to the former site of the Wisconsin Synod's seminary at 13th and Vine streets. Enrollment increased to 340 in 1929 and led to construction of additional buildings at the site. The Great Depression caused enrollment to decline to 265 in 1938, but with the end of the depression, enrollment steadily increased to 848 in 1948. Plans were initiated to build a larger school at a new site, but doctrinal differences between the two synods resulted in the decision for each synod to build its own separate high school and dissolve the joint operation. The Missouri Synod congregations opened Milwaukee Lutheran High School in September 1955, while the Wisconsin Synod congregations used the old campus for their school, Wisconsin Lutheran High School, until their new building opened in September 1959. The enrollment in the final year of joint operation, 1954–1955, was over 1,100. Both of the successor schools consider 1903 to be their founding date.
