The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public research university in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The flagship of the University of North Carolina system, it is considered a Public Ivy, or a public institution which offers an academic experience similar to that of an Ivy League university. After being chartered in 1789, the university first began enrolling students in 1795, making it one of the oldest public universities in the United States. Among the claimants, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the only one to have held classes and graduated students as a public university in the eighteenth century.
Williams Arena is an indoor arena located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the home arena for the University of Minnesota's men's and women's basketball teams. It also housed the men's hockey team until 1993, when it moved into its own building, 3M Arena at Mariucci. The building is known as "The Barn", and its student section is known as "The Barnyard".
Roy Allen Williams is an American retired college basketball coach who served as the men's head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels for 18 seasons and the Kansas Jayhawks for 15 seasons. He was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.
Matthew Francis Doherty, is an American former college basketball coach best known for his time as head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team. Prior to accepting the head coaching position at UNC he spent one season as head coach of the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish men's basketball program.
The South's Oldest Rivalry is the name given to the North Carolina–Virginia football rivalry. It is an American college football rivalry game played annually by the Virginia Cavaliers football team of the University of Virginia and the North Carolina Tar Heels football team of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Both have been members of the Atlantic Coast Conference since 1953, but the Cavaliers and Tar Heels have squared off at least fifteen more times than any other two ACC football programs. Virginia and North Carolina also have extensive rivalries in several other sports.
Tim Brewster is an American football coach and former player who most recently was the tight ends coach for the University of Florida. He also served as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator for the North Carolina Tar Heels football program. He was the head coach of the University of Minnesota from 2007 until he was fired midway through the Golden Gophers' 2010 season. In 2011, Brewster was a sideline analyst for Fox College Football and the NFL on Fox with Gus Johnson and Charles Davis.
John Douglas Swofford is an American former college athletics administrator. He served as the athletic director at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1980 to 1997 and as the commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) from 1997 to 2021.
Robert Fetzer Field was a sports field located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and was the home of the lacrosse and soccer teams of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the North Carolina Tar Heels. The four teams that called Fetzer field their home have a combined total of 26 national championships. The stadium was demolished in 2017 to make way for the new Dorrance Field soccer and lacrosse stadium that was built on the same site.
The North Carolina Tar Heels are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The name Tar Heel is a nickname used to refer to individuals from the state of North Carolina, the Tar Heel State. The campus at Chapel Hill is referred to as the University of North Carolina for the purposes of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was chartered in 1789, and in 1795 it became the first state-supported university in the United States. Since the school fostered the oldest collegiate team in the Carolinas, the school took on the nickname Carolina, especially in athletics. The Tar Heels are also referred to as UNC or The Heels.
Rameses is the ram mascot of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Three versions of Rameses appear at UNC sporting events. One is a member of the UNC cheerleading team in an anthropomorphic ram costume; the second is also an anthropomorphic ram costume, and the third is a live Dorset Horn sheep named Rameses who attends Carolina football games with his horns painted Carolina blue.
Bradford Wayne Edwards is a former American football safety who played nine seasons in the National Football League (NFL) for the Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins, and the Atlanta Falcons. He is currently the Director of Athletics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
Joel Maturi is an American university administrator. He is currently an assistant to University of Minnesota president Eric W. Kaler. Maturi was the athletic director at the University of Denver (1996–1998), Miami University (1998–2002), and the University of Minnesota (2002–2012).
Edward Lindell Teague Jr. was an American football coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, from 1949 to 1950 and The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1957 to 1965, compiling a career college football coaching record of 53–53–3. He also coached The Citadel Bulldogs men's soccer team from 1972 to 1976. Teague was also the athletic director at Guilford from 1949 to 1951 and The Citadel from 1957 to 1985.
Lawrence R. "Bubba" Cunningham is an American college athletics administrator. He was named athletic director for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011. He was previously athletic director for Ball State University from 2002 to 2005 and for the University of Tulsa from 2005 to 2011.
Robert Allison Fetzer was an American football coach, track and field coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Davidson College in 1914 and as co-head football coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with his brother, Bill, from 1921 to 1925, compiling a career college football record of 35–13–5. Fetzer was also the head track coach at North Carolina from 1921 to 1952 and the school's athletic director from 1923 to 1952. He was later the executive secretary of the Morehead Foundation at North Carolina. Fetzer died on May 19, 1968, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The VCU Rams men's soccer team represents Virginia Commonwealth University in all NCAA Division I men's soccer competitions. In 1978, VCU has fielded a varsity men's soccer program. The Rams currently compete in the Colonial Athletic Association.
The 2010–13 Atlantic 10 Conference realignment refers to the Atlantic 10 Conference dealing with several proposed and actual conference expansion and reduction plans among various NCAA conferences and institutions from 2010 to 2013. Moves that involved the Atlantic 10 Conference were part of a much larger NCAA conference realignment.
Julie Story Byerley is an American physician who is known as a leader in the fields of medical education and pediatrics. Byerley has served as a clinical professor and Vice Dean for Education for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She currently serves as President and Dean of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine as well as Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer for Geisinger Health System.
Mark Coyle is the 23rd director of athletics at the University of Minnesota, replacing Norwood Teague. He resigned as the athletics director at Syracuse University in May 2016 after spending only 11 months with the Syracuse Orange.
The 2022–23 North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team will represent the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team will be led by Hubert Davis, in his second year as UNC's head coach. The Tar Heels will play their home games at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
