The Nudes-A-Poppin' pageant was organized by and held at Ponderosa Sun Club, a family nudist resort [5] founded in 1964 [6] and situated in Roselawn, Indiana. [7] The event was first held in 1975 [8] [3] to attract interest in the resort [9] and was subsequently held annually until 2019. [4] Its "Miss Nude Galaxy" beauty contest dated back to the mid-70s. [10] Nudes-A-Poppin' served as a fund-raiser for the resort [11] and contributed significantly to the local economy. [3] The resort was closed to its members during the pageant, and the one-day event tickets could only be purchased separately. [12] The attendance fee for the event was $50 in 2005 [4] but had risen to $60 by 2016. [9] Up to 2003, there was one event in July and another in August, but, starting in 2004, Nudes-A-Poppin' was reduced to one weekend in July. [11] [3] [13] The 2019 event was the last to be held, with the 2020 and 2021 events being cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. [14]

Events held at Nudes-A-Poppin' included the amateur wet T-shirt contest, the sexiest pole dance competition, naked oil wrestling, and others. [11] A "Miss Nude" contest judged by the audience was held here. Various trophies were awarded to the nude contestants, with titles such as "Miss Nude Galaxy", "Miss Nude Go-Go", "Miss Nude Up & Comer", "Miss Nude Rising Star", "Miss Nude Showstopper", [15] "Miss Nude North American" and "Nude Couples Dance Contest". [16]

Lou Harry, writing for Indianapolis Monthly , noted that the participants were prohibited from having sexual contact with another person attending the event or from performing explicitly. Most of the contestants were women. The spectators performed as judges and consisted mostly of men. [16] Photography was a popular activity at the pageant. Spectators were allowed to take photographs but the use of video cameras required a permit. [11] [17]

Attendees

The Ponderosa Sun Club is a family naturist resort and most of its members did not attend the festival. The members agreed to the club hosting Nudes-A-Poppin' because it subsidized their membership fees. [13] Instead local porn stars, strippers, and nudists participate in the event, [4] [7] attracting thousands of other spectators. [7] By 2017 the anticipated number of attendees was around 6000, with the event drawing an international audience. [3] The official website of the event stated that "no clothes are tolerated at the pool." [1] Former porn star Ron Jeremy acted as emcee for Nudes-A-Poppin' for over three decades [7] and personalities such as Home Improvement star Tim Allen, The Munsters star Al Lewis, and John Wayne Bobbitt also hosted the event. [16] [9]

Naturism is a lifestyle of practicing non-sexual social nudity in private and in public; the word also refers to the cultural movement which advocates and defends that lifestyle. Both may alternatively be called nudism. Though the two terms are broadly interchangeable, nudism emphasizes the practice of nudity, whilst naturism highlights an attitude favoring harmony with nature and respect for the environment, into which that practice is integrated. That said, naturists come from a range of philosophical and cultural backgrounds; there is no single naturist ideology.

Gay naturism or LGBT naturism concerns a lifestyle of gay people in which nudity, especially in a communal context, is viewed as natural, positive and healthy. While naturist clubs and resorts in the United States date back to the 1930s, gay naturist organizations did not emerge until the early 1980s. Separate from official naturist clubs, gay individuals have long congregated in locally-known gay beaches in many countries, especially in Europe and North America.

The Exotic Erotic Ball was held annually from 1979 to 2009 on a weekend, usually before Halloween night, in the San Francisco Bay Area, California and was a public, adult-themed event. Over three decades, the annual indoor event was attended by nearly half a million people since its inception with steadily increasing growth in attendance each year until 2010, when the event was cancelled due to poor ticket sales and cost overruns. The 2011 ball was never planned. Due to the worldwide popularity of the event the City of San Francisco issued three proclamations for “Exotic Erotic Ball Day,” twice by Mayor Willie Brown in 1999 and again in 2001, and once by Mayor Gavin Newsom in 2004.
