Nuriye Kesbir (also known as Sozdar Avesta; born 20 June 1948), is a member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and also of the presidential council of Kurdistan Union of Communities (KCK).

Biography

In 2001 she was arrested upon her arrival at the Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands and following Turkey demanded her extradition for alleged war crimes. The Dutch Minister of Justice Piet Hein Donner initially wanted to allow the extradition but Kesbir challenged the decision in the courts. [1] The Human Rights Watch, in an open letter to Piet Hein Donner, demanded that the Netherlands withhold from an extradition to Turkey, due to concerns she might be tortured. [2] Other human rights organizations, including the United Nations (UN) also appealed to the Dutch Government to halt the extradition. [1] On 20 January 2005, a court in the Netherlands decided not to allow extradition due to concerns she would be tortured in Turkish detention and Kesbir was released the same day. [1] After her release the Dutch Government challenged the ruling, appealing at the Supreme Court. [1] On 15 September 2006, the appeal was denied, upholding the decision of the lower court. [3] In September 2005 the Turkish Government asked the United States to include Nuriye Kesbir in their joint efforts to contain the PKK activity in Western Europe.[ citation needed ] Her request for asylum in the Netherlands was halted based on the exclusion clause of article 1F of the refugee convention. The decision of the Dutch Immigration Service was upheld by the court and the higher court for asylum cases. [4] After the denial of her asylum request, she returned to Iraq. [5] In 2013, she was elected as one of the six members of the presidential council of the Kurdistan Union of Communities (KCK). [6] She is a defender of the rights of the Yazidi and the philosophy of Abdullah Öcalan. [7]

In August 2015, an arrest warrant was issued over Interpol against her and 48 alleged members of the PKK accusing them with attempting to establish a Kurdistan in parts of Turkey and disrupting the unity of the (Turkish) state. [8] In 2021, she was included in the investigations of the Kobani trial, in which the defendants of which many are politicians of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) are accused with organizing protests against the Islamic State besieging Kobani. [9] During the protests people died and the defendants are blamed for the deaths by the prosecution. [9]

Leyla Zana is a Kurdish politician. She was imprisoned for ten years for her political activism, which was deemed by the Turkish courts to be against the unity of the country. She was awarded the 1995 Sakharov Prize by the European Parliament but was unable to collect it until her release in 2004. She was also awarded the Rafto Prize in 1994 after being recognized by the Rafto Foundation for being incarcerated for her peaceful struggle for the human rights of the Kurdish people in Turkey and the neighbouring countries.

Aysel Tuğluk is a Kurdish politician from Turkey and was a founding member of the Democratic Society Party (DTP) in Turkey. Aysel Tuğluk is currently imprisoned at the Kocaeli F-Type Prison, located near Istanbul.

Ayla Akat Ata is a Kurdish–Turkish jurist and former member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP). She is a women's rights activist and the co-founder of the Free Women's Congress (KJA). Besides she was also involved in the negotiations between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Turkish Government in 2013.

People's Democracy Party was a Kurdish political party in Turkey. Murat Bozlak founded the party on 11 May 1994. The party disbanded in 2003.

The Kurdistan Communities Union is a Kurdish political organization committed to implementing Abdullah Öcalan's ideology of democratic confederalism. The KCK also serves as an umbrella group for several confederalist political parties of Kurdistan, including the Kurdish militant political organization and armed guerrilla movement Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Democratic Union Party (PYD), Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), and Kurdistan Democratic Solution Party (PÇDK). Finland and Sweden's alleged support for the KCK, is one of the points which caused Turkey to oppose Finland and Sweden's NATO accession bid.

Mazlum Doğan was a journalist and a founding member of PKK. He was a Kurdish Alevi which was often told to attract new recruits to PKK. He was the first chief editor of the propaganda newspaper Serxwebûn of PKK. In 1979, he had planned to leave Turkey towards Syria, but was arrested and served time in the infamous Diyarbakir No. 5 prison. Mazlum Doğan committed suicide in protest of the Turkish coup d'état and the inhumane conditions he and other prisoners were facing inside of the penitentiary. Today he is presented as a hero and a martyr by PKK and related organisations.

A secret witness is a witness which is granted anonymity in a trial by the juridical authority. The identity of the witness is not disclosed to the defendant and the general public except if the secret witness agrees to it. It is a juridical procedure currently often used in Turkish law. Prominent examples are the case against Andrew Brunson and the Ergenekon trials. In several trials against politicians of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) secret witnesses are also used. Following the attempted coup d'état in 2016, secret witnesses were used in many trials.

Gülser Yıldırım is a Turkish Kurd politician of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and former member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. In 2011, she was elected into the Turkish parliament out of prison, but had to wait until 2014 until she was allowed to assume by a Turkish court.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) announced a ceasefire on the 13 April 2009, declaring they would only retaliate in self-defense. The ceasefire was encouraged by the electoral success of the Democratic Society Party (DTP) in the municipal elections of 2009. Then in May 2009, the president of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) Murat Karayilan released a statement supportive of an eventual peace process. Later, the PKK prolonged the ceasefire on the 1 June until the 15 July 2009. On the 15 July the DTP organized a manifestation in support of a peace process which was attended by tens of thousands of people in Diyarbakir, and the PKK again prolonged their ceasefire until the 1 September 2009. The Human Rights Association (IHD), Freedom and Solidarity Party and the Labour Party also supported a potential peace process.

The trial of Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), began on 31 May 1999 and concluded on 29 June with a death sentence for treason and separatism. Öcalan was captured in February 1999 in Nairobi, Kenya and extradited to Turkey. He was imprisoned on the İmralı island in the Sea of Marmara. After his conviction, Öcalan appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which ruled he did not have a fair trial and demanded a retrial. The death sentence was confirmed by the Court of Cassation in November 1999 and Turkey denied Öcalan a retrial. His death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in October 2002.

Emine Kara, also known by the nom de guerre Evîn Goyî, was a Turkish Kurdish militant and political activist who served as president of the Mouvement des femmes kurdes en France.
