The Oakland Golden Grizzlies baseball team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, United States. [2] The team is a member of the Horizon League, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The team plays its home games at Oakland University Baseball Field in Rochester, Michigan.

Contents

Oakland won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) league championship in 1978. [3]

Jacke Healey and Colin Kaline were named co-head coaches of the Oakland program on July 12, 2016. [4] Healey was relieved of his duties as co-head coach in June, 2019. Kaline continued as the team's head coach. [5] The team was coached solely be Kaline until his resignation in March 2020 for health reasons. [6] On May 29, 2020, Jordon Banfield was named the programs new head coach. [7] On July 12, 2024, Banfield resigned from Oakland to accept the Head Coach position at Cal-State Bakersfield. [8] Brian Nelson was promoted and named the Interim Head Baseball Coach on July 17, 2024 for the 2025 Season. [9]

Major League Baseball

Oakland has had 19 Major League Baseball Draft selections since the draft began in 1965. [10] Don Kirkwood one of the only 2 OU players to have played in Major League Baseball. He played for the California Angels, Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays from 1974 to 1978. The other is Mike Brosseau of the Tampa Bay Rays although he went undrafted he made his way to the pros in though the Rays farm system.

They finished the season 16–17, 11–5 in Horizon League play to finish in a tie for third place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League tournament to UIC. They were invited to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament where they lost in the first round to Eastern Illinois.

They finished the season 23–12, 13–5 in Horizon League play to finish in a tie for second place. They lost in the semifinals of the Horizon League tournament to Wright State. They were invited to the inaugural Vegas 16 where they defeated Towson and East Tennessee State to advance to the championship game where they lost to Old Dominion.

The 2016–17 Oakland Golden Grizzlies men's basketball team represented Oakland University (OU) during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Golden Grizzlies were led by 33rd year head coach Greg Kampe and played their home games at the Athletics Center O'rena in Rochester, Michigan as members of the Horizon League. They finished the season 25–9, 14–4 in Horizon League play to finish in a share for the Horizon League regular season championship. As the No. 1 seed, they were upset in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League tournament by Youngstown State. As a conference champion and No. 1 seed who failed to win their conference tournament, they received an automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament where they defeated Clemson in the first round to advance to the second round where they lost to Richmond.

Jacke Healey is an American college baseball coach and former shortstop. Healey was the Co-head baseball coach at the Oakland University from 2017 to 2019 with Colin Kaline.
