While he worked on increasing the size of M.S.C.'s student body,Hannah also expanded the institution from a college of regional reputation into a nationally recognized research university. When the University of Chicago eliminated its athletics and resigned from what is now the Big Ten Conference in 1946,Hannah lobbied hard to take its place. The Big Ten finally admitted M.S.C. in 1950. Five years later,on the College's centennial year of 1955,the State of Michigan made it a university. [3] In 1957 he continued M.S.U.'s expansion co-founding Michigan State University–Oakland (now Oakland University) with Matilda Dodge Wilson. The Hannah Hall of Science on Oakland University's campus is named for him. [4] Michigan State University continued to expand throughout the 1960s,completing its newest dormitory in 1967. None have been built since.
By 1969,Vietnam-era protests had completely reshaped the university. Much of the controversy surrounded Hannah and the University's involvement in Vietnam with the Michigan State University Group (MSUG). Hannah was accused of being responsible for allowing the CIA to involve itself in MSUG. [5] Hannah resigned to become the head of USAID.
The John A. Hannah Distinguished Professorship at Michigan State University was established in 1966. [6]
As part of its sesquicentennial celebration,MSU erected a 7-foot bronze statue of Hannah in front of his namesake administration building on September 17,2004,sculpted by California artist Bruce Wolfe. [7] [8]
Additionally,the football team retired the number 46 in honor of 46 years of service to the university.

Sparty is the mascot of Michigan State University. Sparty is usually depicted as a muscular male Spartan warrior/athlete dressed in stylized Greek costume. After changing the team name from "Aggies" to "Spartans" in 1925,various incarnations of a Spartan warrior with a prominent chin appeared at university events and in university literature. In 1943,MSU art professor Leonard D. Jungwirth designed a statue for the university,which had to be cast in terra cotta because of World War II rationing. In 2005,the university replaced Jungwirth's original statue with a bronze replica,moving the original indoors to protect it from the elements.
Lou Anna Kimsey Simon is an American academic administrator who served as the 20th president of Michigan State University (MSU). Simon was appointed interim president of the university in 2003,then served as president from 2005 until her resignation in 2018.
Saints' Rest was the second building erected on the campus of the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. It was built in 1856 and served as the school's only dormitory until 1870,when Williams Hall was completed. Along with College Hall and a horse barn,it was one of three buildings completed when the college opened for classes in 1857.
College Hall was the first building erected on the campus of the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan,and the first in the United States to be erected "for the teaching of scientific agriculture." Reputedly designed by John C. Holmes,it was built in 1856 and housed the school's classrooms,offices and laboratories,the school's library/museum,and a multifunction lecture hall/chapel. Along with Saints' Rest,and a horse barn,it was one of three buildings completed when the college opened for classes in 1857.
The Beaumont Tower is a structure on the campus of Michigan State University,designed by the architectural firm of Donaldson and Meier and completed in 1928. The 104-foot-tall (32 m) tower marks the site of College Hall,the first building constructed on the campus,as well as the first building in America erected for instruction in scientific agriculture. Due to poor construction,College Hall collapsed in 1918. John W. Beaumont,an 1882 alumnus of MSU,proposed the construction of the monument to conserve the Campus Circle and serve as a monument to teaching.

Alice B. Cowles House is a structure on the campus of Michigan State University. It is the oldest extant building on MSU's campus,though only the foundation and two exterior walls remain from the original 1857 construction.

Demonstration Hall is a structure on the campus of Michigan State University. It was built in 1928 with offices,classrooms,and a riding arena for the Military Science department as a replacement for the Armory. Exhibitions of agricultural stock and implements were held here,as well as athletic events. It served as the home court for the Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team from 1930 to 1940,and the ice rink for the Michigan State Spartans men's ice hockey team from 1949 until Munn Ice Arena was completed in 1974.
The Residential College in the Arts and Humanities (RCAH) is a residential college at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing,Michigan,United States. Founded on October 21,2005,the college provides around 600 undergraduates with an individualized curriculum in the liberal,visual,and performing arts. Though all the students in the program will graduate with the same degree,only the first year programs and MSU prerequisites are mandatory for graduation. The college encourages its students to get a second degree or specialization in a program outside RCAH. The new college is MSU's fourth residential college,after James Madison College,the Lyman Briggs School,and the now-defunct Justin Morrill College. Although early proposals named the college after Nelson Mandela,university officials had not decided on a permanent name as of 2006,saying that it was still too early to fix a permanent name to the college.
John Clough Holmes was an American agriculturalist,educator,and co-founder of the Michigan State Agricultural Society. Holmes is also known as the founder of Michigan State University,established in 1855 as an agriculture college,the first of its kind in the United States. Holmes Hall,the home of the Lyman Briggs College,is named in his honor.

The Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) is one of the two public medical schools of Michigan State University,a public land-grant research university in East Lansing,Michigan. The college grants the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree,as well as a DO-PhD combined degree for students interested in training as physician-scientists. MSUCOM operates two satellite campuses in Clinton Township and Detroit. The college is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association's Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and by the Higher Learning Commission.
