Michigan news updates and NPR News are heard at the beginning of most hours. While WKAR-FM concentrates on classical music, WKAR AM has an all news and talk schedule. Morning Edition and All Things Considered are heard on both stations. WKAR AM programming is also carried on WKAR-FM's HD Radiodigital subchannel.
WKAR-FM is the primary Emergency Alert System (EAS) station for the state of Michigan, relaying emergency messages from the Michigan State Police to all media outlets in Michigan. It hosts statewide tests twice a year. WKAR-FM is also the secondary EAS station for Lansing and the South Central Michigan region (WFMK is the primary station for the region).[3]

After World War II, Michigan State University decided to add an FM station to supplement WKAR (870 AM). WKAR-FM signed on the air on October 4, 1948.[4] It was the Lansing area's first FM station, although few people owned radios that could receive FM signals then.
Like most FM stations of the time, it simulcast its AM sister during its sunrise to sunset broadcast hours. When the AM station had to sign off at sunset to protect WWL in New Orleans, WKAR-FM would then carry its own signature programming which included classical music and other arts-related programs.
The two stations split their broadcasting schedules on March 1, 1965. The FM station most aired fine arts programming, while the AM station concentrated on news and information. The WKAR stations became charter members of NPR. In 1971, they were among the 90 stations carrying the inaugural broadcast of All Things Considered.
WKAR-FM is a "Superpower Grandfathered" Class BFM station, providing a signal 7.6 dB stronger than would be granted today under current U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules.[5] While most stations in this section of Michigan are limited to 50,000 watts, WKAR-FM is powered at 85,000 watts. WKAR-FM went on the air before the FCC rules on maximum power were established.
In January 2013, WKAR-AM-FM launched the daily news/arts radio magazine Current State, an hour-long program of interviews and produced reports devoted to Mid-Michigan and statewide politics, government, business, education, environment, science, technology, health, medicine and the arts. The program was broadcast Monday through Friday at 9 am and 6 pm on 90.5 FM and weekdays at noon on AM 870. It was discontinued several years later.
HD programming
WKAR-FM is licensed by the FCC to broadcast using HD Radio (hybrid) technology.[6] Until 2017, its HD signal broadcast on three streams.
HD1 is a simulcast of the analog FM signal's classical music and NPR format.
HD2 is a simulcast of WKAR (870 AM), continuing from local sunset to sunrise when the AM station is not broadcasting. It is also simulcast on a low-powered translator at 102.3 FM giving most of the Lansing area access to a locally focused NPR news and talk station. It originally was a simulcast of the Classical 24 music channel. That service airs on the main signal from 7 pm to 5 am.
HD3 was a simulcast of WKAR AM; it was also simulcast on a low-powered translator at 105.1 FM. On June 30, 2017, WKAR-FM ended its HD3 subchannel.[7] The Classical 24 stream is available on the WKAR website, along with streams of the Lansing area's radio reading service as well as a jazz channel. Currently, the HD2 subchannel simulcasts WKAR 870 AM.
KOST is a commercial radio station in Los Angeles, California. Owned by iHeartMedia, it broadcasts an adult contemporary radio format, switching to Christmas music in early November and ending on Christmas Day. Its studios are co-located with its sister stations on West Olive Avenue in Burbank. KOST is the home of Ellen K, segments of whose morning show are syndicated to other iHeart AC stations on Saturday mornings.
WGUC is a public radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is owned by Cincinnati Public Radio and has a classical music format. WGUC broadcasts using HD Radio technology and plays jazz on WGUC-HD2 and adult album alternative on WGUC-HD3. WGUC has radio studios in the same building as PBS Network affiliate WCET Channel 48, the Crosley Telecommunications Center on Central Parkway in Cincinnati.
WOSU-FM is a non-commercial educational radio station licensed to Columbus, Ohio, featuring a public radio news and information format known as "89.7fm NPR News". Owned by The Ohio State University, the station serves the Columbus metro area and has multiple repeaters throughout Ohio, making the station a multiple transmitter station.
WLTJ is a commercial radio station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is owned by The Frischling Family, through licensee WPNT Media Subsidiary, LLC, and broadcasts a hot adult contemporary radio format.
WILL-FM is a public, listener-supported radio station owned by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and licensed to Urbana, Illinois, United States. It is operated by Illinois Public Media, with studios located at Campbell Hall for Public Telecommunication on the university campus. Most of WILL-FM's schedule is classical music with NPR news programs heard in weekday morning and afternoon drive times. Weekends feature classical and other genres of music, including jazz and opera.
KKGO is a commercial radio station licensed to Los Angeles, California. It is owned by Mount Wilson FM Broadcasters and airs a country music format, switching to Christmas music from Thanksgiving weekend to Christmas Day. The studios are on Cotner Avenue at Ohio Avenue in Los Angeles' Westwood neighborhood, while the transmitter is atop Mount Wilson. Besides a standard analog transmission, KKGO broadcasts four HD Radio channels and is available online.
Michigan Public is a network of five FM public radio stations operated by the University of Michigan through its broadcasting arm, Michigan Public Media. The network is a founding member of National Public Radio and an affiliate of Public Radio International, American Public Media, and BBC World Service. Its main studio is located in Ann Arbor, with satellite studios in Flint and offices in Grand Rapids. It currently airs news and talk, which it has since July 1, 1996. The combined footprint of the five stations covers most of the southern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, from Muskegon to Detroit.
WRVF is a commercial radio station in Toledo, Ohio, owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. It broadcasts an adult contemporary radio format, switching to all-Christmas music for much of November and December. WRVF carries the syndicated Delilah music and call-in show in the evening. The radio studios and offices are at Superior and Lafayette in Downtown Toledo.
WPLN-FM, is a non-commercial public radio station in Nashville, Tennessee. It airs a news, talk and information radio format and is owned by Nashville Public Radio along with sister station WNXP. The station's studios and offices are located on Mainstream Drive north of downtown Nashville, which are considered among the finest radio production facilities in the U.S. WPLN-FM is simulcast on two low-powered repeaters on the fringes of the Middle Tennessee area: WHRS 91.7 FM in Cookeville and WTML 91.5 FM in Tullahoma.

The Gamut programming is also available on the HD3 subchannels of sister stations WTLP and WWWT-FM.
