Oasi Zegna is a free access natural territory located in the Biellese Alps, Piedmont, Italy, with an area of about 100 square kilometers. Established in 1993, its roots date back to the 1930s by entrepreneur Ermenegildo Zegna, founder of the Zegna Group and a native of the area where the park stands today.
In the 1930s, Ermenegildo Zegna, who had founded the famous brand of the same name in Trivero in 1910, began to devote himself to social and welfare works aimed at improving the welfare of the community, as well as protecting the environment and promoting his home territories. Among other activities, Zegna promoted the reforestation of the area and had over 500,000 trees planted, laying the foundation for what is now Oasi Zegna. [1] [2]
In 1938 Zegna began construction of a panoramic road (now named 232 Panoramica Zegna) that still runs through the Oasis offering sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. [3] In 2021, the Zegna brand paid homage to the road by recalling it in its new logo. [4]
Ermenegildo Zegna's work and his project to enhance and promote the mountains and the environment continued even after his death. In 1993 the area involved became Oasi Zegna, a project created under the initiative of the third generation of the family at the helm of the company, with the goal of creating a true ecosystem that would combine business, environment and local development. In 2014, Oasi Zegna was awarded the patronage of the FAI Fondo Ambiente Italiano, the National Trust of Italy. [5]
Oasi Zegna is now a well-appreciated tourist destination because of the various activities available there, such as trekking, mountain biking, air sports, horseback riding and bird watching. [6] The resort of Bielmonte is also a popular ski destination. [7]
The area also hosts several land art hosts, including Two Way Mirror - Hedge Arabesque, a glass pavilion located in the Conca dei Rododendri. [8] The work is part of the contemporary art project "ALL'APERTO" (‘OUTDOORS’) promoted by Fondazione Zegna. [9]
In 2015, Oasi Zegna joined the LIFE CARABUS Project, implemented with the support of the European Union to protect biodiversity. [10]
In 2020, the Zegna Forest project, a multi-year plan to safeguard the forest heritage of the Oasis, was launched. [11]
In 2021, Oasi Zegna promoted the Outer EduCampus project, a learning laboratory with the aim of fostering awareness of the balance between man and nature, in the wake of Ermenegildo Zegna's thinking. [12]
In 2022, Oasi Zegna adopted a new logo, featuring the outline of a mountain cut by a road, in reference to the Zegna Panorama that runs through the area and in homage to Ermenegildo's 'green thinking'. [13]
The project has a Scientific Committee consisting of ten environmental experts and scholars. [14]
The Oasi Zegna is member of the Biellese territory ecomuseum in order to preserve the pastoral and mountain tradition like beekeeping.

The hydrography of the Biella region, that is, the distribution of surface water in the province of Biella, Italy, falls almost entirely in the two basins of the Cervo and Sessera rivers, both tributaries of the Sesia. Some areas of the southwestern Biella region, on the other hand, are tributaries of the Dora Baltea; the largest natural body of water in the province, Lake Viverone, is also located in this area. In addition to the natural bodies of water, there are several irrigation canals in the plains built mainly to support rice cultivation and some reservoirs built in the foothills. In addition to irrigation, surface water is also used in the Biella area to serve the region's numerous industries and for potable water use, because the area is densely inhabited and groundwater capture is insufficient. Hydroelectric use, on the other hand, is very limited and is substantially confined to the Sessera Valley. The streams of the Biella region can be subject to ruinous floods as well, which have caused numerous damage to property and people over time.
The Ivrea Morainic Amphitheatre is a moraine relief of glacial origin located in the Canavese region. Administratively, it encompasses the metropolitan city of Turin and, more marginally, the province of Biella and the province of Vercelli. It dates back to the Quaternary period and was created by the transport of sediment to the Po Valley that took place during the glaciations by the great glacier that ran through the Dora Baltea valley. With an area of more than 500 km2, it is one of the best-preserved geomorphological units of this type in the world. As an extension, it is surpassed in Italy only by the similar formation surrounding Lake Garda. The name amphitheater, usually given to these geomorphological structures, refers to their characteristic elliptical shape that is noticeable when it is shown as a plan on a map.
