Oblivion Records is an independent American record label that focuses on under recorded blues and jazz musicians. The company was originally based in Huntington, New York and the WKCR-FM studios at Columbia University in New York City, with a post office box (Box X) in Roslyn Heights, New York from 1972–1976. [1] It now operates out of Los Angeles. After almost 50 years, Oblivion announced a new release in November 2021. [2]
The company was formed based on a casual conversation between Long Island, New York hippie record shop co-owner, [3] musician, [4] and blues scholar [5] Tom Pomposello, and college student, former musician, and amateur recording engineer Fred Seibert, when Pomposello was musing about the best way to record and release his band's music. Seibert suggested a major label was a thing of the past and the way of the future was that Pomposello should record himself. The two quickly formed a partnership. [6]
Seibert hosted a Columbia University, WKCR-FM radio show, [7] [8] and had recorded Pomposello when he accompanied legendary country blues artist Mississippi Fred McDowell at The Gaslight Cafe in November 1971. [9] They agreed that the tapes were a commercial offering that could be used to launch the label. Pomposello suggested the tongue-in-cheek name Oblivion, cadged from an obscure Leo Kottke album, mistakenly believing the name to be a satire. [10]
Along with third partner Dick Pennington, who provided the initial financing, Oblivion released its maiden album, Mississippi Fred McDowell: Live in New York in the spring of 1972. 1972 also saw the release of the label's only 45rpm single, "Johnny Woods: Mississippi Harmonica" [11] from Fred McDowell's sometime musical partner, harmonica player Johnny Woods. [12]
Seibert's interest was jazz, and by the end of 1972 the first jazz session was recorded, pointing the company towards the future. Marc Cohen (who eventually changed his last name and primary instrument) was a former Columbia student and mainstream jazz alto saxophone player [13] who came to WKCR with a trio and his saxophone plugged into an Echoplex and amplifier. [14] Seibert heard kinship with Miles Davis', Tony Williams', and John McLaughlin's electronic experiments, and with the addition of guitarist John Abercrombie recorded one of the earliest "electronic jazz" records, soon to be known as jazz fusion. The album (five stars from Down Beat Magazine ) was named "Friends" (Copland felt it was a collective effort), with a cover by a Columbia University based "outsider" Sam Steinberg, [15] [16] it was Oblivion's third release. [17]
Pomposello's blues scholarship was increasing [18] [19] and one area of particular interest was the state of the form in the immediate New York City metropolitan area, Oblivion's home territory. Never a deep hotbed of traditional blues (Chicago, Illinois was the Northern U.S. center of the music), nevertheless New York had a reliable output over the postwar years by such artists as Elmore James, Wilbert Harrison, and Buster Brown. When guitarist & vocalist Charles Walker visited WKCR, Pomposello made it his mission to record him over a year's time with various configurations of a dozen local players. Blues from the Apple came out in 1974 [20] and fittingly credited to "Charles Walker & the New York City Blues Band." [21]
Joe Lee Wilson was a mainstream jazz vocalist who was making his name in Manhattan's loft scene of the 1970s. He recorded a highly buzzed session at WKCR in 1972, which Oblivion launched as Livin' High Off Nickels and Dimes, a New York jazz radio sensation in the autumn of 1974. [22]
Oblivion's last album was its inspiration. Honest Tom Pomposello [23] was an album of Americana "roots music", spanning from the expected blues, to folk and R&B, utilizing nine musicians recorded over two years. [24]
With only two mildly reliably commercial records, Fred McDowell's Live in New York and Joe Lee Wilson's Livin' High Off Nickels and Dimes, Oblivion found it could no longer be sustained off the passions and industry ignorance of its founders, the saga of many independent labels with inadequate capitalization. The company ceased initial operations in 1976.
Dick Pennington left company operations after Blues from the Apple, Tom Pomposello passed away after a car accident in 1999, Fred Seibert went on to work in television, becoming a leading independent animation producer and a pioneer in digital video.
In 2001, Seibert –having led MTV Networks' internet division [25] and founding trailblazing video programmer Next New Networks [26] – revived Oblivion's catalog, first in downloads and eventually in streaming audio on all global platforms. The company's activities are chronicled on a Tumblr blog. [27] Its latest release will drop in early 2022. [28]

Fred McDowell, known by his stage name Mississippi Fred McDowell, was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist.
Milestone Records is an American jazz record company and label founded in 1966 by Orrin Keepnews and Dick Katz in New York City. The company was bought by Fantasy Records in 1972. Since then, it has produced LP reissues as well as new recordings. Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner are among the musicians who recorded for the label.

WKCR-FM is a radio station licensed to New York, New York, United States. The station is owned by Columbia University and serves the New York metropolitan area. Founded in 1941, the station traces its history back to 1908 with the first operations of the Columbia University Radio Club (CURC). In 1956, it became one of the first college radio stations to adopt FM broadcasting, which had been invented two decades earlier by Professor Edwin Howard Armstrong. The station was preceded by student involvement in W2XMN, an experimental FM station founded by Armstrong, for which the CURC provided programming. Originally an education-focused station, since the Columbia University protests of 1968, WKCR-FM has shifted its focus towards alternative musical programming, with an emphasis on jazz, classical, and hip hop.
John Laird Abercrombie was an American jazz guitarist. His work explored jazz fusion, free jazz, and avant-garde jazz. Abercrombie studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He was known for his understated style and his work with organ trios.

"Trouble No More" is an upbeat blues song first recorded by Muddy Waters in 1955. It is a variation on "Someday Baby Blues", recorded by Sleepy John Estes in 1935. The Allman Brothers Band recorded both studio and live versions of the song in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Something Cool is the debut solo album of June Christy. It was recorded in 1953, 1954, and 1955, and features Christy singing 11 jazz songs backed by the orchestra of Pete Rugolo, and her saxophonist husband, Bob Cooper. First issued in 1954 as a 10" mono LP, an expanded 12" mono LP was released the following year, with four newly recorded selections added to the track listing. In 1960, Christy and Rugolo re-recorded all 11 selections in stereo, so that a stereo version of Something Cool could be issued. For many years, this re-recorded version of the LP was the only one commercially available.
Spring of Two Blue-J's is a 1974 live album by Cecil Taylor, the second set of a "return concert" recorded at The Town Hall in New York City in November 1973. Originally released on Taylor's Unit Core label, bootlegged on European CDs, it was legitimately reissued for the first time in 2022 on global streaming platforms by its original producer, Fred Seibert's Oblivion Records. The LP features one side-long solo performance by Taylor and one side-long quartet performance with Jimmy Lyons, Sirone, and Andrew Cyrille.

New Orleans Suite is a studio album by the American pianist, composer, and bandleader Duke Ellington, recorded and released on the Atlantic label in 1970. The album contains the final recordings of longtime Ellington saxophonist Johnny Hodges, who died between the album's two recording sessions. The album won a Grammy Award in 1971 for Best Jazz Performance by a Big Band.

Tom Pomposello was an American roots musician, notably playing and recording with country blues musician Mississippi Fred McDowell, who also worked as a cable television and advertising producer for clients like Nickelodeon, Nick-at-Nite, and MTV. He died in a car accident outside of Kingston, New York in January 1999.
Live in New York is the final album recording by the American country blues musician Mississippi Fred McDowell. New York-based American independent Oblivion Records released the first edition in the Spring of 1972, months before McDowell's death in July 1972. A subsequent Oblivion issue with a one song substitution, and new and redesigned liner notes came out one year later.
Blues from the Apple, released in 1974 by Oblivion Records, is the only album under the leadership of guitarist and vocalist Charles Walker. The music was arranged by Evans and members of his orchestra. The album was recorded in 1974 and performed by Evans with an orchestra featuring David Sanborn, Howard Johnson, Billy Harper, and John Abercrombie. The album was re-released with additional tracks on CD in 1988.
