Odair Sanches is an amateur basketball guard from Cape Verde. Sanches plays for the basketball side of Seven Stars. He played with Cape Verde at the FIBA Africa Championship 2007 [1] in Angola and won the bronze medal.
The Cape Verde national basketball team represents Cape Verde in international basketball matches and is administered by the Federação Cabo-verdiana de Basquetebol.
AfroBasket 2007 was the 24th FIBA Africa Championship, played under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Basketball, the basketball sport governing body of the African zone. The tournament was hosted by Angola, in the cities of Benguela, Cabinda, Huambo and Lubango.
In 1995, it was estimated that there were 50,000 people of Cape Verdean descent or national origin in Portugal. By 2000, this estimation rose to 83,000 people, of which 90% resided in Greater Lisbon." In 2008, Portugal’s National Statistics Institute estimated that there were 68,145 Cape Verdeans who legally resided in Portugal. This made up "15.7% of all foreign nationals living legally in the country."

Marques Houtman is a Cape Verdean American basketball point guard. He is an alumnus and two-time Hall of Fame inductee at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he played college basketball for 2.5 years following 3 semesters at Stonehill College finishing in the sweet 16. Houtman played on the 25–3, #2 in the nation Team at UMD that made it to the Sweet 16 which made him a rare player to play in both Division 2 & 3 NCAA Sweet 16. Houtman is a regular on the Cape Verde national basketball team, including the squad which won a bronze medal at the FIBA Africa Championship 2007 in Angola. Professionally, Houtman played with the Boston Frenzy, coached by Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, father of Kobe Bryant after graduation. He is also a graduate ('97) of New Bedford High School.
AfroBasket 2009 was the 25th FIBA Africa Championship, played under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Basketball, the basketball sport governing body, and the African zone thereof. At stake were the three berths allocated to Africa in the 2010 FIBA World Championship. The tournament was hosted by Libya after Nigeria, the original host, withdrew from hosting after not conforming to FIBA Africa guidelines.
Mário “Marito” Correia is a Cape Verdean professional basketball player. He played for Primeiro de Agosto at the Angolan Basketball League until 2014, before being struck by injury. Correia’s early introduction to basketball started in the District Sports Association Kwame Nkrumah abbreviated to ADESBA-KN. Correia is currently the captain of the Cape Verde national basketball team and helped Cape Verde to a bronze medal at the FIBA Africa Championship 2007, qualifying for a wildcard tournament for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

He was selected with the 43rd overall pick in 2014 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks and has played internationally for the Cape Verde national basketball team. Tavares receives praise as a physical phenomenon, standing 7 ft 3 in (2.21 m) tall and possessing a 7 ft 9 in (2.36 m) wingspan.

The 2019 FIBA Africa Under-16 Championship, alternatively the 6th Afrobasket U16, was an international basketball competition held in Praia, Cape Verde from 5–14 July 2019. It served as a qualifier for the 2020 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup in Bulgaria.
The AfroBasket 2021 qualification was a basketball competition that was played from January 2020 to July 2021, to determine the fifteen FIBA Africa nations who would join the automatically qualified host Rwanda at the AfroBasket 2021 final tournament.
