Dana Bruce Barros is an American former professional basketball player from the National Basketball Association (NBA). In college, he played at Boston College, finishing as one of the school's all-time leading scorers. He was the head men's basketball coach at Newbury College in Massachusetts. He is now the owner of AAU Basketball organization, the "Dana Barros Gladiators", based in Avon, Massachusetts, and now Stoughton, Massachusetts. He is of Cape Verdean descent.

He is an alumnus and two-time Hall of Fame inductee at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he played college basketball for 2.5 years following 3 semesters at Stonehill College finishing in the sweet 16. Houtman played on the 25–3, #2 in the nation Team at UMD that made it to the Sweet 16 which made him a rare player to play in both Division 2 & 3 NCAA Sweet 16. Houtman is a regular on the Cape Verde national basketball team, including the squad which won a bronze medal at the FIBA Africa Championship 2007 in Angola. Professionally, Houtman played with the Boston Frenzy, coached by Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, father of Kobe Bryant after graduation. He is also a graduate ('97) of New Bedford High School.

At stake were the three berths allocated to Africa in the 2010 FIBA World Championship. The tournament was hosted by Libya after Nigeria, the original host, withdrew from hosting after not conforming to FIBA Africa guidelines.

Also a member of the Cape Verde national basketball team, Mario Neves Oliveira joined Cape Verde to help them win a bronze medal at the FIBA Africa Championship 2007, qualifying for a wildcard tournament for the 2008 Summer Olympics. He also participated with the team at the FIBA Africa Championship 2009, averaging 6.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game as the team finished a disappointing 13th place.
Mário “Marito” Correia is a Cape Verdean professional basketball player. He played for Primeiro de Agosto at the Angolan Basketball League until 2014, before being struck by injury. Correia’s early introduction to basketball started in the District Sports Association Kwame Nkrumah abbreviated to ADESBA-KN. Correia is currently the captain of the Cape Verde national basketball team and helped Cape Verde to a bronze medal at the FIBA Africa Championship 2007, qualifying for a wildcard tournament for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Tavares receives praise as a physical phenomenon, standing 7 ft 3 in (2.21 m) tall and possessing a 7 ft 9 in (2.36 m) wingspan.
