Odisha Naval Tata Hockey High Performance Centre (ONTH-HPC) is a professional field hockey institute located at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. It was launched on 13 August 2019 after Government of Odisha, Tata Steel & Tata Trusts (Hockey Ace foundation) joined hands to initiate a three-pronged program under the HPC banner of Government of Odisha. [1] It is one of the 11 HPCs at the Kalinga Stadium which have been set up under the governance of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik [2] and Commissioner Cum Secy Sports Shri Vineel Krishna, who have been very influential in development of sports in the state.

The purpose of the Odisha Naval Tata Hockey HPC is to nurture the budding talent in the state, train and groom them to achieve national and international participation in order to contribute towards the Olympic Glory. It runs under the Hockey Ace Foundation (HAF) whose chairman is Chanakya Chaudhary. Former cricketer Rajiv Seth is the project director of the HPC in Bhubaneswar.

Key Details

Bovelander Hockey Academy, founded by former Dutch hockey star Floris Jan Bovelander, is the technical partner of Naval Tata Hockey HPC. [3] As of 2022, there are 36 resident cadets in the boys' program [4] and 38 resident cadets in the girls’ program. The Sports Hostels of Odisha's Sports & Youth Services Department in Panposh, Sundargarh & Bhubaneswar are the 3 Regional Development Centres of the HPC. It has also established 14 grassroots centres - 8 in Sundargarh, 2 in Sambalpur, and 1 each in Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Ganjam and Nayagarh. [5]

Achievements and Accolades

In May 2022, 4 girls from the HPC were selected in India Junior Team for the Uniphar U-23 5-nation tournament which was held in Ireland from June 19–26. [6] The Women in Blue went on to clinch silver medal in that tournament.

On 31 March 2022, the Odisha Naval Tata Hockey HPC Grassroot Boys' team defeated Uttarakhand by a margin of 31–0 to register one of the biggest wins during 32nd All India KD Singh Babu Memorial Under-14 Prize Money Hockey Tournament. [7]

He is the longest-serving chief minister of Odisha and as of 2023, one of the longest-serving chief ministers of any Indian state, holding the post for over two decades, and only the third Indian chief Minister after Pawan Chamling and Jyoti Basu to win five consecutive terms as Chief Minister of an Indian state.He was also the Union Minister of Steel and Mines from 1998 to 2000 and a member of the Lok Sabha from Aska from 1997 to 2000.

Bijayananda Patnaik was an Indian politician, aviator and businessman. He served as the 3rd Chief Minister of the State of Odisha from 1990 to 1995 and from 1961 to 1963. He was also the 14th Steel and mines and 1st Coal Union Minister of India from 1979 to 1980 and from 1977 to 1979 and a member of Lok Sabha from Kendrapara from 1977 to 1985. He was the father of Naveen Patnaik, who was the current CM of Odisha and currently the longest serving CM of Odisha.

Floris Jan Bovelander is a former field hockey player from the Netherlands, who was a member of the Dutch national squad that won the gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Six years earlier, at the Hockey World Cup in Lahore, where he scored nine times, he won the world title with the Dutch side at the expense of host nation Pakistan.

Sundargarh is a town in Sundergarh district of the Indian state of Odisha. As of 2011 census, the municipality had a population of 45,036. Sundargarh is recognized as an industrial district in Odisha. Rajgangpur is an industrial town situated in the Sundargarh District of Odisha. It is located 400 km to the north-west of the capital city, Bhubaneswar. It is located 30 km west of Rourkela. It is accessible by both road and rail. Rajgangpur Railway Station is on Mumbai-Rourkela line. Regular buses are available to Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Rourkela and Angul. RGP Main Road is the main road of the town. The nearest functional airport is Veer Surendra Sai Airport, Jharsuguda which is approximately 95 km from Rajgangpur. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Kalinga Stadium</span> Multi-purpose stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha

The Kalinga Stadium is a multi-purpose International sports complex in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. Its foundation stone was laid by the former chief minister of Odisha Biju Patnaik in 1978. It is the home ground of the Indian Super League club Odisha FC since its inception in 2019 and also of the I-League club Indian Arrows from 2018 until 2022. It is situated in the heart of Bhubaneswar near Nayapalli area. It has facilities for athletics, football, field hockey, tennis, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, wall climbing and swimming. Other features of the stadium includes an 8-lane synthetic athletics track, high performance centres, and India's first Olympic standard pink and blue water-based AstroTurf.

He was the sitting MLA from Khandapada constituency for the state assembly of Odisha from 2014-2019. He is the son of Late Arun Kumar Patnaik, an erstwhile MLA of the state assembly. He has also been appointed as spokesperson by the ruling party of Odisha, Biju Janata Dal and secretary in charge of “Women Empowerment” for BJD.

The 2017 Asian Athletics Championships was the 22nd edition of the Asian Athletics Championships. It was held from 6 to 9 July 2017 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India. Bhubaneswar was the third Indian city to host Asian Championships. Around 560 athletes from 41 countries attended the event.
