Odus Evbagharu is an American politician and political analyst. He is the current Treasurer of the Texas Democratic Party,and was chair of the Harris County Democratic Party,becoming the youngest and first Black person to hold the position. [1] Evbagharu also was chief of staff to Texas State Representative Jon Rosenthal and is currently a candidate for the Texas House of Representatives in District 135. [2]
Evbagharu was born in London,England,to Nigerian-born parents,with one sister and one brother. Evbagharu moved to America with his family when he was five years old and Houston when he was 10. He became a U.S. citizen in 2005. [3] In Houston,Evbagharu grew up in the suburbs of Cypress and attended school in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. He attended the University of Houston and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science in 2018.[ citation needed ]
On June 27,2021,Evbagharu was elected Chairman of the Democratic Party in Harris County,Texas —the third largest county in the U.S. [4] He is the youngest and the first Black chair of the Harris County Democratic Party (HCDP). [5] Evbagharu replaced Lillie Schechter,who served as HCDP Chair between 2017 and 2021. [1]
Evbagharu is treasurer for the Texas Democratic Party. [6] He worked for the Harris County Democratic Party between 2017 and 2018,first as a Communications Fellow,then as Communications Director and Candidate Coordinator. He was the campaign manager for Eliz Markowitz in her 2019-2020 special election race for Texas House District 28. Evbagharu joined Texas Rep. Jon Rosenthal’s team as political director in January 2018 and in November of that year became Rosenthal’s Chief of Staff. [7]
In 2025,Evbagharu announced that he is running for the Texas House of Representatives in District 135,following Representative Jon Rosenthal’s decision to pursue a statewide office. [2] His campaign focuses on issues including public education funding,expanding Medicaid,raising the minimum wage,and protecting reproductive rights. [2] He has received several local endorsements as the race develops. [8] Evbagharu’s candidacy is also discussed within broader reporting on political shifts in the Houston area,including school-board elections and changing voter engagement. [9] [10]
