Okanagan Symphony Orchestra

The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra is a Canadian instrumental music ensemble based in Kelowna, British Columbia. From 2006 until December 2023, the orchestra's principal conductor was Rosemary Thomson. [1] [2] [3] The orchestra performs both classical and contemporary orchestral works. [4] The orchestra plays throughout the Okanagan valley, in Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon. [5]

History

The orchestra was founded in 1960 by its first conductor, Willem Bertsch. In 1964, Douglas Talney became the conductor. In 1965, Leonard Camplin took over and remained the conductor for years. [6]

In 1970, the Okanagan Symphony Choir was established. It was directed at first by Jocelyn Pritchard, who was succeeded in 1978 by Imant Raminsh. [6]

In 1974, the orchestra received a Canada Council grant to hire a resident cellist. [7] In 1991, the principal violinist was Imant Raminsh. [8]

In 1981, OSO members organized Sinfonia, a chamber orchestra. [6] In 1988, a youth orchestra was organized by Raminsh. [9]

A performance of the OSO was heard nation-wide on a CBC Radio broadcast in 1989. [6]

The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra performed a series of concerts in 2017 with guest musician Sean Bray to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday. [10]

For many years, the principal horn player for the orchestra was Edmond House; he retired in 2017. [11]

In April 2018, the orchestra performed in concert with singer/songwriter Sarah Slean. [12] A 2018 concert, "Prodigy," featured 12-year-old pianist and composer Kevin Chen performing early works by Mozart. [13]

In 2019, the orchestra presented two Masterworks concerts titled "Themes and Innovations". [14] In December of that year, in anticipation of its 60th anniversary, the symphony, along with the OSO Chorus, presented Handel's Messiah , the first in a series of planned special performances. [15]

The Victoria Symphony is a Canadian orchestra based in Victoria, British Columbia. It is considered Vancouver Island's largest and best-known performing arts organization. Currently conducted by Danish conductor Christian Kluxen, the orchestra consists of 34 full-contract, and 15 part-contract musicians. Typically, the orchestra delivers more than fifty main series programs per season, as well as a two-week-long summer series. A highlight of the year for many Victorians was the annual Symphony Splash fund-raising concert, held on the Sunday of the August long weekend. For more than 30 years, the orchestra performed on a barge in Victoria's Inner Harbour for an estimated audience of thirty thousand— including those attending in kayaks, canoes or dragonboats immediately in front of the barge. The orchestra administration consists of a staff led by Matthew White, CEO, a board of directors, and many volunteers.

The Bach-Elgar Choir is a community chorus of long standing in Hamilton, Ontario, currently directed by Alexander Cann. The Choir is composed of accomplished amateur singers from Hamilton and the neighbouring cities of Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga and Simcoe. Notable performances by the ensemble include the North American première of Verdi's Requiem and the Canadian premieres of Górecki's Miserere and Mahler's Symphony No. 2. The choir has performed at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, The Sanderson Centre in Brantford, and at the Brott Music Festival in Hamilton. The choir makes frequent guest appearances with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra.

Kelowna Regional Transit System is operated by Transdev, providing public bus transportation services in part of the central Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada. Funding for the transit system is shared between the City of Kelowna, Regional District of Central Okanagan, District of Lake Country, City of West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation and BC Transit, while the planning and routing decisions are primarily made by Kelowna City Council. Kelowna Regional Transit was one of the first public transit systems in Canada to have double-decker buses, and the first in Canada to have hybrid buses on regular routes. The hybrid and double deckers buses have since been relocated to Victoria.

Geoffrey Moull is a Canadian professional conductor. He was principal conductor of the Bielefeld Philharmonic Orchestra and music director of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.

Albert Pratz was a Canadian violinist, conductor, composer, and music educator. He was awarded the Canadian Centennial Medal in 1967. His compositional output was modest and consists of only instrumental works. Some of his compositions, such as Melanie Waltz (1956) and A Tango (1957), were recorded by the CBC Symphony Orchestra; of which he was concertmaster from 1953 to 1961. He worked in the same capacity for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra from 1966 to 1969, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1970 to 1979. He was also active as a teacher, both privately and at a number of universities, and made recordings as both a violinist and conductor.

Musikay is a professional choir and orchestra based in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Musikay was founded in 2005 under the name Oakville Chamber Choir by Artistic Director Stephane Potvin, a Quebec born conductor who also served as Resident Conductor and Artistic Administrator to the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.
