Okechukwu Ezea (born 11 August 1963) is a Nigerian politician, lawyer, and businessman, who serves as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Enugu North Senatorial District since 2023.

Early life and education

Okechukwu Ezra was born in Enugu State, Nigeria, to Theresa (née Attamah) and James Ezea from Enugu State. [1] He attended Community Primary School, Umachi in Enugu-Ezike, and Nsukka High School in Nsukka for his primary and secondary education respectively. Ezea proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he studied political science, graduating with BSc in 1986. Ezea also had his LL.B and LL.M in law from the University of Lagos, Akoka. [1]

Career

After his National Youth Service Corps in September, 1987, Ezea got employed into the Nigerian Customs Service, where he worked as the Deputy Superintendent, tho retired in 1994. [1] In same year, Ezea entered into a capitalist business and founded the Ideke Shipping Limited. Between 1995 and 2018, Ideke Shipping provided a number of intermodal logistics services. Ezea subsequently founded Ideke Engineering Limited, Ideke Overseas Limited, Damik Ventures Limited, and Damik Security Limited. [1]

Politics

Ezea became a local politician while still in the University of Nigeria, where he held school positions. In 2007, he became a full-time politician and contested as the candidate for Labour Party in the 2007 Enugu State gubernatorial election. The result of the election was overturned after a court challenge and The Enugu State Governorship Election Tribunal. [2]

In 2013 Ezea co-founded part of the All Progressive Congress in Enugu and he became the candidate in 2015. In 2018, Ezea was appointed by Muhammadu Buhari as the Chairman of the governing board, Federal Medical Center in Jalingo, Taraba State, a position he held until he resigned in 2022 to join the Labour Party. On 25 February 2023, Ezea was elected as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria where he represents Enugu North Senatorial District. [3]

Emmanuel Nnamdi Uba, is a Nigerian politician who served as Senator for the Anambra South Senatorial District of Anambra State from 2011 to 2019. Uba also won the 2007 Anambra State gubernatorial election on the platform of the People's Democratic Party but was declared unduly elected by the Supreme Court of Nigeria a month later. He defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress in February 2017, the leadership crises engulfing the former ruling party PDP may have motivated his decision.

The 2023 Enugu State gubernatorial election took place on 18th March 2023, to elect the Governor of Enugu State, with Peter Mbah declared winner alongside his running mate Barrister Ifeanyi Ossai of the Peoples Democratic Party (Nigeria), after they got the plurality of votes and won over 25% of the votes in two-third of the state. Mr Mbah polled 160,895 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the Labour Party (Nigeria) candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, who scored 157,552 votes. The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Frank Nweke Jr, garnered 17,983 votes to come a distant third, while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Uche Nnaji, placed fourth, with 14,575 votes. The election was contested in the Tribunal by Chijoike Edeoga but the tribunal eventually upheld the victory of Peter Mbah.

Oyibo Chukwu was a Nigerian lawyer and politician. He was a former chairman of Nigerian Bar Association in Enugu State. Chukwu of the Labour Party, though running against a current senator and a former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani of the PDP, was a leading candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District in the 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections. He was assassinated on 22 February 2023, just three days before the election.

Senator (Dr) Victor C. Umeh, OFR is a Nigerian politician who served as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and now Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District in the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on the ticket of the Labour Party. Umeh hails from Aguluzigbo, a town in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
