The Old Haileybury Football Club, nicknamed the Bloods [1] , is an Australian rules football club based in the suburb of Caulfield, Melbourne, competing in the Premier A Division of the Victorian Amateur Football League. [2] The club was originally associated with Haileybury College, and are currently sponsored by the school. [3] [4]

Contents

The Bloods have won ten A-Grade premierships since their founding in 1961. In 2006 they won the Premier A premiership [5] , the highest level of amateur football in Victoria, and have played between Premier A, B and C in VAFA's relegation and promotion system since the late 1980's.

The club brandishes the colours magenta, black and occasionally gold. Their club song is set to the tune of Notre Dame Victory March, the same as the Sydney Swans.

History

Origins

The Old Haileybury Football Club was initially formed in the 1925 MAFA season. [6] but due to poor performance entered a merger with Old Trinity, forming Old Haileybury-Trinity in 1928. [7] By 1934, Haileybury-Trinity had dissolved with only a single finals appearance shared between the merged club and it's preceding clubs.

Modern club

The current incarnation of the Old Haileybury Football Club entered the VAFA's E Section (now known as Division 2) in 1961. [8] They played their first match against their former partners The Old Trinity Grammarians, winning the match. The club found early success and was promoted to the D Section (modern Division 1) in 1962, winning that divisions premiership in 1963, causing their promotion to the C Section (Premier C). The club maintained a position of success in the D Section while struggling in the C Section, making them a Yo-yo club for the remainder of the 1960's. In 1969, the Bloods secured another D section premiership, which saw them become a solid C Section club for around 20 years, achieving promotion to the B section only once in this time. In 1989 they won their first C Section premiership, and went on in 1990 to win back-to-back flags as B Section premiers. The Bloods maintained themselves as a solid VAFA club, bouncing between the Premier A & B divisions, winning another Premier B premiership in 1995. In 2006 the club won their first Premier A premiership over the Old Xaverians Football Club, the most successful club over the past decade. The club entered a team into the inaugural season of the VAFA Women's, The Hearts, in 2017.
