Club career

NEC

Romeny started playing football at age 8 at DVOL in Lent before moving to the youth academy of NEC Nijmegen. [3] In the winter of 2018, he was promoted to the first-team. [4] Under new coach Pepijn Lijnders, he became a regular part of the squad. [5] On 19 January 2018, he made his debut in a 2–3 away defeat to Almere City, replacing his childhood friend Ferdi Kadıoğlu in the 84th minute. In injury time, he had to leave the field after being sent off by referee Kevin Blom. [6] With that, he became the youngest player ever in the Eerste Divisie to receive a red card in his debut. The card was later dismissed after NEC filed a complaint and won the appeal. [7]

Loan to Willem II

On 30 September 2020, Romeny signed for Eredivisie club Willem II on a season-long loan, with the option of a permanent transfer. [8]

Emmen

On 27 January 2022, Romeny signed with Emmen for a 1.5-year term. [9]

Utrecht

On 13 June 2023, Romeny joined Utrecht on a three-season deal. [10]

Oxford United

On 5 January 2025, Romeny signed for EFL Championship side Oxford United on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee. [11] [12]

International career

Romeny played one international match for the Netherlands national under-15 and under-18 teams. [13]

In November 2024, Romeny confirmed that he had decided to represent Indonesia at international level. [14]

On 20 February 2025, his change of association was approved by FIFA, becoming cap-tied to Indonesia in the process. [15]

Personal life

Romeny was born in the Netherlands. [16] His maternal grandmother was born in Medan, North Sumatra, when it was called the Dutch East Indies. [17] Romeny is therefore eligible to represent Indonesia at international level. [18]

On 8 February 2025, Romeny officially obtained Indonesian citizenship. [19]
