Oluf van Steenwinckel (died 1659) was a Danish building master and engineer, probably the son of Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger.

Biography

In the 1640s he worked at Nykøbing Castle among other places and from 1651 to 52 he was Copenhagen's first City Surveyor (Danish: Stadskonduktør), involved in the cedestral registration and parcelling of Frederick III's New Copenhagen. In June 1659, during the Northern Wars, he participated in a failed attempt to recapture Kronborg Castle and was executed by the Swedish. [1]

Legacy

A monument to Steenwinckel, Hans Lassen, Lorenz Tuxen and Henrik Gerner was later erected in the Jægersåris Memorial Park.

The Berritzgaard estate and manor house is one of the largest and best preserved manor houses on the island of Lolland in Denmark. Later, the Huitfeldt family purchased the estate. Jacob Huitfeldt and his wife Lisebeth Friis built the present manor house that was constructed by Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder. Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder was a Flemish-Danish architect and sculptor. He worked on a large number of the most important Danish buildings of his time, although the exact scope of his contributions in many cases remains uncertain and much have been demolished or redesigned later. The father of Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger and Lorenz van Steenwinckel, he also founded a dynasty of architects and sculptors in Denmark.

Lorenz van Steenwinckel (1585–1619) was a Flemish-Danish architect and sculptor, son of Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder and brother of Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger. From 1613, he was responsible for numerous projects commissioned by Christian IV. Christian IV's Chapel at Roskilde Cathedral and the Stock Exchange in Copenhagen were among his many projects underway when he died in 1619, only 34 years old. The projects were completed by his brother Hans van Steenwinckel.

Hans van Steenwinckel the Youngest (1639–1700) was a Danish architect and sculptor, son of Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger and grandson of Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, he became a Royal Building Master in 1669. Around 1680 he also became Naval Building Master at Holmen, replacing Ewert Janssen.

Hans Rostgaard was a Danish bailiff (ridefoged) and county administrator (amtsforvalter) at Helsingør who is remembered for his achievement in the Second Northern War and especially his role during the Swedish siege of Copenhagen and subsequent assault on the city in 1659. He is also associated with Krogerup Manor in Humlebæk where a statue of him by Hans Peder Pedersen-Dan was installed in 1904. He was the father of Frederik Rostgaard and the uncle of Jens Rostgaard.

Bishop Henrik Gerner was a Dane who studied theology and travelled extensively in England. From 1656, at the age of 27, he became the parish priest for Birkerød and in 1693 until his death, he was appointed bishop of Viborg.
