Kunjamma was born in the village of Thikkurissy, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari (then a part of Kerala's Travancore Kingdom), in an aristocratic Malayalee Nair family, to Mangat C. Govinda Pillai and N. Lekshmi Amma.
