Omera LPG is a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) brand incorporated in Bangladesh that has been developed and owned by Omera Petroleum Limited, a subsidiary of MJL Bangladesh Limited. Omera LPG is engaged in importing, storing, bottling, and distributing LPG in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

History

Natural gas dominated as the primary fuel source in the early decades of Bangladesh. The first hydrocarbon exploration in East Bengal took place in 1911 and the first gas reserve was discovered in 1955. [1] The use of natural gas in industrial sectors began in East Bengal in 1955. In 1968, the piped Natural Gas connection was introduced to households of East Pakistan. [1]

In response to the demand for alternative fuel and the growth of the market, Omera Petroleum Limited, a subsidiary of MJL Bangladesh Limited. has launched Omera LPG in the market on March 31, 2015. [2]

Market analysis conducted by LightCastle Partners in 2019 concluded that Bashundhara Group led the LPG market in Bangladesh with a 24% share, while Omera was the second-largest provider, with a 20% market share. [3]

Omera LPG, in partnership with Caritas Internationalis, distributed LPG cylinders among 12,000 refugee households to promote clean and reliable energy source for cooking and heating activities. The project was also taken envisioning to environmental situation development and improved air quality. [4]

Omera LPG has also been seen to take measurements against the Covid-19 Pandemic situation by endorsing PPE to the National Central Jail of Bangladesh. [5] [ relevant? ]

Omera Cylinder Limited is a manufacturer of steel LPG cylinders in Bangladesh. It was established in 2015. [6]

Omera Gas One Limited

Omera Gas One Limited (OGL) signed agreements in 2020 with Meghna Petroleum Limited (MPL), Jamuna Oil Company Limited (JOCL) and Padma Oil Company Limited (POCL) - three oil distribution giants of Bangladesh - to distribute LPG to their gas stations and facilitate conversion of vehicles to LPG there. The scale of operations of Omera has been expanded from national to global in 2020, by Omera Cylinders Ltd. exporting cylinders in African Regions. [6]

Give Up LPG Subsidy is a campaign that was launched in March 2015 by the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is aimed at motivating LPG users who are able to afford to pay the market price for LPG to voluntarily surrender their LPG subsidy. As of 23 April 2016, 10 million people had voluntarily given up the subsidy. The surrendered subsidy is being redistributed by the government in order to provide cooking gas connections to poor families in rural households free of cost. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi and Tamil Nadu are the top five states to give up the subsidy.

MJL Bangladesh Limited widely known as Mobil Bangladesh, formerly known as Mobil Jamuna Lubricants Limited, is a company that is jointly owned by Jamuna Oil Company, a subsidiary of government-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation and EC Securities Limited, a subsidiary of East Coast Group. Azam J Chowdhury is the Managing Director of the MJL Bangladesh Limited. M. Mukul Hossain is the Chief Executive Officer of the company. It markets products of ExxonMobil as the strategic alliance partner of the company in Bangladesh.

Meghna Petroleum Limited is a Bangladesh petroleum company owned by Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, a state owned corporation. Mir Saifullah-Al-Khaled is the Managing Director of Meghna Petroleum Limited. Md. Anisur Rahman, Senior Secretary at the Energy and Mineral Resources Division is the chairman of the Board of Directors of Meghna Petroleum Limited. It is one of three major petroleum corporations owned by the Government of Bangladesh along with Padma Oil Company and Jamuna Oil Company.

East Coast Group is a Bangladeshi diversified conglomerate based in Dhaka. Azam J. Chowdhury is the chairperson of the company. In 2019, it had 30 subsidiaries and US$4 billion in assets. Tanjil Chowdhury, chairman of Prime Bank Limited, is the managing director of East Coast Group.

Azam J. Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi businessman. He is the Managing Director of MJL Bangladesh Limited and Chairperson of East Coast Group, The Consolidated Tea & Lands Company Bangladesh Limited, and former chairperson of Prime Bank Limited. He is the honorary consul of Hungary in Bangladesh.

Md. Mahbub Hossain is a Bangladesh civil servant and incumbent Cabinet Secretary of Bangladesh. Prior to this position, he was Senior Secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. He also served as the chairperson of Titas Gas and Gas Transmission Company Limited. He is the chairman of Omera LPG as nominee of MJL Bangladesh Limited. He is a director of Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited.
